Wednesday, January 31, 2007 Holy Bleak I went to the early show of Children of Men with my friend Jason. It was very good, but oh, how bleak! It was filmed in a documentary style which made things feel quite urgent and real. I'm glad I saw it while it was in the theatres, though. Posted by Dre at 10:31 PM 0 comments Tuesday, January 30, 2007 New Blogger My apologies for not posting this morning. When I went to sign in to Blogger, I was forced to switch over to the new version of Blogger and since I've got a large blog, it took a while. My run that I'd planned with Anthony didn't happen. Check out my comment about it under yesterday's post if you're interested. Otherwise I had a very quiet evening. I'd hoped to get a few things done around the house and then do a bit of gaming, but due to a migraine I wound up napping with the cats. Today was a busy day. I still had the migraine but at least it wasn't a bad one. I could still function at least. It was busy enough that I wound up working until 8:30 this evening. It looks like another quiet evening in. Hopefully tomorrow I'll wake up headache-free. :-) Posted by Dre at 9:39 PM 0 comments Monday, January 29, 2007 Nike + iPod system I've caved in and gotten the new Nike + iPod system and I'm really looking forward to trying it out. I'm going to meet up with Anthony at the track at UNBSJ so we can callibrate our systems. It seems pretty cool and will be an extra incentive to running and a great way to accurately track everything. There's even a vocal thing that tells you how well you're doing on your run. Posted by Dre at 12:58 PM 0 comments Friday, January 26, 2007 Friday Feast #128 Appetizer If you could take lessons to learn any musical instrument, which would you want to learn? Hmm... I'm not sure. I love the sound of the cello, and I enjoy piano stuff, but it would be awfully handy to be able to bring a guitar to a house party.... Soup Have you ever mistaken a person for someone else? Yes. Salad On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how well do you keep secrets? 10 if I've been asked to keep someone else's secret. Not so much if it's my own. Main Course What's the closest you've ever been to a dangerous animal? It depends what you mean by dangerous animal. I've held a 115 lb python before. Would you consider that dangerous? Dessert When was the last time you lost your patience? Last week. Posted by Dre at 8:14 AM 0 comments Monday, January 22, 2007 Weeknd Update It was a good weekend. A few of us celebrated Colin's birthday on Friday evening by dining at Suwanna (his birthday is tomorrow!). I also finally finished Colin's b-day painting and presented it to him. It's still drying at my place but it should be ready for him to take home within the week. I should try to remember to get a photograph of it too. Anyway - great dinner that evening. the food and conversation were both really enjoyable! Saturday was a full day. It started when I woke up at 5:30 in the morning and gamed for a few hours. I then cleaned the apartment, and at 3 PM, Lisa, Jay M and Anthony popped by so we could start a bit of character creation for our Serenity RPG. We then decided on dinner out together, so Jay went home and got his Lisa and we all met up and headed to Churchills soon after. John and Sabine joined us too. After some tasty burgers, etc., we headed back to my place to play some board games. We played a few rounds of Scatergories and then a bit of Balderdash before we all started to fade and decided to call it a night. What a fun day! I made plans on Sunday to be as lazy as possible, and I think I did a pretty good job of it. For starters, I slept in. This is a rare occurrenc for me. Even on weekends I'm generally up and about by 8:30. I made it a point to lay in bed and try to drift off again and wound up sleeping on and off until 11:30!! I then turned on the PS2 and played Final Fantasy XII for the rest of the day. I took a break for lunch and supper, and I took a break when Colin popped by and that was about it. I'm now Level 32 and in the holy city. Next time I play I'm going to head back and do a bit of level farming and try to get a better handle on some of the sections I passed through. But I digress... I'm not sure if I'll get a chance to post this week. I have a business conference to go to and I don't have a laptop. Posted by Dre at 8:06 AM 0 comments Friday, January 19, 2007 Friday Feast #127 Appetizer Which television shows do you just refuse to miss? None. I don't really watch much tv anymore and don't relly make a point of watching certain shows. I am, however, fond of renting a season of a show and watching it on my own schedule over the course of a week. I've done that with the first season of 24, the first season of Entourage, the first three seasons of Nip/Tuck, and I own every season of Sex & The City. Soup Who did you last speak to on the telephone? I had a breif chat with Jay M last night. Salad How many pillows do you keep on your bed? I sleep with one but there are 2 normal pillows plus 2 large ones with covers that match the bedspread that go on top. My mom made the covers - they are forest green and a rusty brown and the fabiric looks like a microseude. I also have matching smaller decoartive pillows: a square one in the same materials, a round one - brown on one side, green on the other, a tube-shaped one with the same fabrics, a cream tube-shabed one and a cream one that mom made for me when I was a teenager that has lace around the edgs and a unicorn done in cream candle-wicking on it. So, 9 pillows total. Main Course Name one addition to your computer (software, hardware, etc.) that you'd love to have. I am trying to save up for a new home computer I'd love a Mac laptop. My iMac is about 6 years old now. It has been upgraded so it has more memory but the processor is REALLY slow. Dessert What is your favorite foreign food? Sushi - specifically unagi (eel). Posted by Dre at 8:09 AM 0 comments Thursday, January 18, 2007 Internal Monologue OK, well I have no choice to to really focus and finish that painting tonight. Geez, I hope I can get it done and that I don't have to stay up too late. I could use a good nights sleep. So much on the mind lately. Tons to do for work. Man, I hope I can get everything done that I need to get done. Got that work trip coming up too. I'm really looking forward to getting through that and getting on with my year. Hmmm... Chinese New Years is coming up. Feb 18th if I remember correctly... I wonder what the year of the Pig will bring. Hopefully it'll be better than last year. Not that I had a bad year last year, it was just too busy. Yep. Could certainly use some down time. Maybe once the work trip is done. At least I'm back into a more regular workout routine now that I'm feeling healthy again. I wonder when I'll be able to run outside again. It looks like it'll be warming up again towards the end of the week. I'm not intereted inrunning on icy stuff, but then they're usually quite good about keeping harbour passage clear. But then, isn't it supposed to rain on Friday? Huh. Well, tonight it won't matter as I'll be doing weights at the gym - a nice upper body worout with Lisa. so then if I'm home by 8 then that leaves me about 4 hours to paint. I should try to remember to have supper right when I get home from work then. That'll save me some time. I wonder what I'll wind up watching while I paint tonight. Maybe Willow or Tomb Raider 2... whatever I wind up watching it'll have to be something I can listen to more than watch as I'll be pretty focused on the painting. I wonder what new movies are coming to the theatres around here this weekend. I wonder if some of the stuff that I wanted to see over Christmas that I didn't get around to seeing is still playing. Maybe I'll have time on Sunday to see something. But maybe I'll just wait until next week when I get back. I hope I can get to sleep tonight. I've been getting to bed at around midnight but my mind has been stuck on work stress stuff for hours and I'm starting to feel pretty drained. When it rains it pours sometimes at work. oy.... Posted by Dre at 8:02 AM 0 comments Tuesday, January 16, 2007 Let It Snow I had trouble getting to sleep on Sunday night - just lots on my mind about work mostly. I finally dozed off around 1:40, but then I woke up at 6. I couldn't go back to sleep so I just got up and went into work. Man - it's so easy to be productive when you start early (no interruptions)! I didn't feel up to running on Sunday but by the time work finished on Monday, I was ready for one. Unfortunately it was snowing pretty heavily so that meant heading to the treadmills at the gym. I met Suzy there around 5:40 and we hopped on a couple of the machines that were free. Lately it's been so busy at the gym due to new years resolutions but it was comparitively quiet last night. It was a good run, even if it isn't the most stimulating scenery. I headed home for dinner and then painting. still working on Colin's painting. I'm hoping to finish it tonight. Even so, it's oil and it probably won't be dry for a couple of weeks. I like the quality of oil paint but it's kind of a pain to work with. Posted by Dre at 7:49 AM 0 comments Monday, January 15, 2007 Tracking Fitness I'm quite fond of tracking things when it comes working out, and especially when it comes to running. Every now and then I need a reminder of how things are going, and it's nice to know if I'm on track or not. Recently, Anthony picked up the iPod Nike sports kit, and while that looks totally cool, I don't have an iPod nano to use with it. I keep a running journal at home, and since I've been running with friends, I've kept a seperate blog for tracking runs as well. But I've recently come across a couple of sites that have been put together to help you track your fitness goals, including JustMove.org and MyStartOnline - both by the American Heart Association. Posted by Dre at 7:29 AM 0 comments Friday, January 12, 2007 Friday Feast #126 Appetizer What comes to mind when you see the color orange? A whole variety of orange things - oranges, an orange sari blowing in the wind against an azure sky, orange petals on a tigerlily, orange woven placemats, a room with the walls painted orange and the sound of children laughing in the distance. Soup Did you ever get in trouble while you were in school? If so, what was it for? Once. Junior kindergarden. I was 4 and I was just starting school for the first time. I remember I was playing with something and a boy came along and tore it out of my hands (and yes - I remember struggling to hang on to it) and hit me. I was stunned for a moment that someone would do such a thing, so I followed him over to where he was playing and hit him back. The teacher only saw that last bit, and I was the one who had to sit in a corner. I hope life has dealt that little brat what he deserves. Salad Which topping(s) make up your perfect pizza? Goats milk cheese that is made like regular mozzerella cheese (I'm lactose-intolerant) and chicken (also allergic to pork and I can't really have sausages as milk or buttermilk is usually used as a binding agent) and black olives and seasoning. (No green peppers either, as I'm allergic to bell peppers too.) Needless to say, I don't eat pizza anymore. Unless Joanna makess one of her special creations, but even since the last time I've had one of her pizzas, I've developed the allergies to pork and bell peppers. Sigh. Main Course Do you believe in UFOs/aliens/etc.? Why or why not? No. Now I'm not saying that life doesn't exist elsewhere, but I don't think we're going to get visited by anything. Space is vast. There is a ton of empty space. I don't think a lot of folks realize just how small we are and how much empty space there is. There is a great description of this in Bill Bryson's fantastic book, A Short History of Nearly Everything. Dessert What color is your bedspread/comforter/quilt? It's tan with light brown and sage green designs on it. The designs are very faded - I think if you look closely you can tell that it's grape vines.... Posted by Dre at 8:11 AM 0 comments Thursday, January 11, 2007 Not Much New I've just been working and painting and playing a bit of FFXII. Posted by Dre at 8:08 AM 0 comments Tuesday, January 09, 2007 Discoveries My evening felt like it was about 20 minutes long and it wasn't because I worked late. I had a gret workout with Lisa at the gym, even though it was so busy that we had to really modify our routine. I stopped in at the loft to pick something up from Scott M (but he'd forgotten to bring it). Saint Johhn Theatre Company: Second Stage is holding auditions for four great locally written one act plays and the full-length, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. I then headed to the east side and picked up Final Fantasy XII for the PS2 and used copies of Match Point and Lucky Number Slevin. I also rented a couple of movies while I was at Blockbuster. You see, the other day, I rented Beowolf and Grendel and that led to my recent discovery of Gerard Butler. I faintly remember having seen him in Tomb Raider, but then I realized that he was in a couple of movies that I'd intended on seeing a long while back but never gotten around to: namely, Dracula 2000 and The Phantom of the Opera. I'm looking forward to watching those this week while I work on a painting. By the time I got home and ate, it was 10 PM. I opted to just check out the opening sequence to FFXII and wound up playing for 2 hours and had to force myself to put it down and get to sleep. I faintly remember hwo Lisa and Scott M both said it was addictive and now I understand! Posted by Dre at 7:54 AM 0 comments Monday, January 08, 2007 A Fun Weekend Friday was a quiet evening. I hadn't slept well the night before so I made it an early night and didn't get much done other than puttering about my apartment. Saturday I did some makeup for Richard's film and lunched with the guys before running off to play a nice big session of D&D. The game was great! Jay obviously had done a lot of planning for it and all of our characters had something cool happen to them. I didn't want the game to end, except for the fact that I was getting peckish - at least for something more substantial than munchies. We decided to head to Boston Pizza and called a few folks to join us. After a lengthy dinner, we then headed back to Jay & Lisa's to play some games. Guitar Her and DDR were set up in the basement, and while we were having fun with that, a few folks started a game of charades upstairs. Soon enough we would up plaing The Name Gmae (much like Taboo but with names and not as teams- essentially you have to et someone to say a name of someone famous without actually telling them the name). IT was a blast and we wound up playing 2 games. I can't believe that I lasted as long as I did. It was 2 AM by the time we started to pack things up for the evening. Normally I'd have bailed at 10:30. I must have been having a good time! Sunday was a quiet day. SOme tidying in the morning and a short run around noon, then napped in the afternoon before making supper and settling in to work on Colin's painting. While I painted, I half-watched Step-Up and Beowolf and Grendel. Posted by Dre at 8:12 AM 0 comments Friday, January 05, 2007 Friday Feast #125 Appetizer Which celebrity (or celebrities) do you think will make headlines this year? Unfortunately, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan. Soup They say that good things come in small packages? What is something little that you think is great? Nintendo DS games, the new ipod shuffle and nanos Salad Name a song that makes you want to dance. "Do You Only Want to Dance" by Mya Main Course What is your favorite font? For an every day font I like Trebuchet because of the lower-case g. Dessert If you were to write a do-it-yourself article, what would it be about? How to apply basic stage makeup for yourself. Posted by Dre at 5:56 AM 0 comments Wednesday, January 03, 2007 The Old Routine: Renewed I made it back to the gym yesterday. It certainly helps having a workout partner. I think Lisa and I both tend to slack off more if only one of us is going. It felt good to get back, even if it was extremely busy. Within a few weeks things should quiet down again a tthe gym. It always does. I spent the remainder of my evening playing an old PS2 game, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, while my cats sprawled out on my legs and snoozed. It has been a while since they've done that, and they are both pretty long now so they don't fit very well. Eventually Hunter managed to push Grace off so she just curled up beside me. Man, they are so cute! Posted by Dre at 7:55 AM 0 comments Tuesday, January 02, 2007 Back At It With Renewed Vigor The new year is always a great time for a bit of a fresh start, so as I get back to the grind after my Christmas vacation, I'm trying to get back to those good habits that I either had (like getting back to the gym) or wanted to have (once again trying to drink more water and eat out less). Posted by Dre at 8:03 AM 0 comments Monday, January 01, 2007 Happy New Year! It's been a busy holiday season and I haven't been anywhere near a computer. I travelled to Halifax to spend Christmas with my family and I brought the cats along. I got back and set to work helping Richard out with his short film and getting errands done (such as getting my snow tires on - finally!) I even had one competely lazy day where I didn't even leave the house - I just spent the entire day gaming. Oh, and of course there was the evening of Dungeons and Dragons at Jay and Lisa's as well as the afternoon of games along witht the Risk tournament at Chris's family's place. I'm looking forward to the new year and I hope it's a good one for everyone! Posted by Dre at 11:33 AM 0 comments |
