Road to Recovery

Well that flu sucked. I couldn't even knit, let alone watch TV. Since then I've been busy with work, having taken some home on the weekend so I could catch up. It makes for a long week when you're wishing it was Friday and it's only Monday.

Glurg. Flu.

I'm hoping I haven't passed this one on to anyone that I've been near. It's a doozy. Coughing/sore throat plus all the usual aches etc plus a whole lotta indigestion. I'm home today. And I'm going straight back to bed.

Decor8 Treats

At my work Christmas party in December, I won a gift certificate to a local shop, Decor8. I finally decided on a couple of practical items for the kitchen and a fun Eiffel Tower tea light holder...

Coraline 3D

It has been years since I've seen a 3-D film, and this weekend I went to see Coraline. Things sure have come a long way since I was a kid, when 3-D glasses were terrible and the 3-D stuff looked kinda bad and made you nauseous. Now they provide you with 3-D glasses that look like Ray Bans, that don't make the entire world look green or red. The film actually looked 3-dimensional, and in a few scenes (the sewing needle, the 2-D mice as the portal first opens, the piaon hands) it felt like I could reach right out and touch things.

The movie itself was so worth seeing. I can see why folks have said that it's creepier for adults than kids. Besides the great story and the well-done animation, I absolutely loved some of the design elements such as the flowers in the garden that light up, the art-deco/art nouveau styled egyptian bug furniture and lighting fixtures in the living room, the way Coraline's bedroom was decorated in both worlds, the other mom's outfits, etc.

If you get a chance to see it in theatres while it's out in 3-D, it's totally worth it.

Creepy:

Set Concept Painting

Sandra asked if I could do some sort of illustration to help the set painters, props folks, costume folks and cast have a better idea of how it'll we'd like it to look. Thanks to Brian's great layout (and fun sky-light concept), it was a great start...

Shepherd's Pie

Thanks to mom and dad for the recipe!! (I feel like I just leveled up in cooking.)

2 tbsp cooking oil
2 lbs lean ground beef
2 medium to large onions, finely chopped
4-8 cloves of garlic, finely minced
1/2 tsp each, salt and pepper
1/4 tsp each, thyme and savoury
6 tbsp white enriched flour
2 cans, (10 oz) beef broth
1/2-1 can of water
6-8 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
2 cups carrots, grated
5-6 medium potatoes (about 5-6 cups mashed)
4 cups frozen niblet corn (or 1/2 and 1/2 frozen peas), defrosted & microwave cooked
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/2 cup (Lactose Free in my case) 2% milk
11/2 cup (Goat cheddar cheese in my case) or old cheddar cheeze
3-4 tbsp grated Parmesan cheeze (optional)
1-2 tbsp buttered bread crumbs or wheat germ (optional)

In a large sausepan, cook ground beef in heated cooking oil lightly, stirring with fork to break
up. Add onion and garlic and cook until softened. Stir in seasonings and flour.
Add broth, water, Worcestershire and carrots. Simmer partiallly covered for about 20 minutes, stirring
often, until fairly thick and carrots are tender. Add Salt and pepper.
Spread in a 9x13 inch baking pan and allow it to cool slightly. Evenly spread corn (and/or
peas) over the meat mixture.
Meanwhile, boil potatoes in salted water. Mash with milk and 1/2 the egg mixture. Fold grated
cheeze into potatoe mixture. Spread the potatoes carefully over the meat
(easiest if you place dollops and start from the edges). Brush top of the potato mixture with reserved
egg. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheeze or wheat germ. Bake in 400F oven for
about 15-20 minutes or until golden on top.

Serves 6-8. Lefttovers refridgerate or freeze well.

**** Fabulous tasting!
