Wednesday, May 11, 2005 The Bad Side Last night I took a bit of time out of my evening to unwind and decided to game for a bit. I have a few games for the xbox where you can create a character that can make good or evil choices. So far I'd played the games with characters that were very good but I've heard it's a lot more fun to create charaters that are evil, so I decided to give it a try. Alas, I don't make a very good bad guy so far. I played for a bit in Knights of the Old Republic, and then tried it for a bit in Fable. Each time, when faced with a choice, I had a really hard time making the "bad" choice. It wasn't long before I gave up on that and called it a night. This makes me think back to what a goodie-two-shoes (where does this term come from anyway?) I was when I was growing up. I think I only got in trouble a couple of times - throwing a tantrum when I was 3 years old, and then late for and early evening curfew once when I was about 12 years old. I was always afraid that I'd disappoint people, and I guess I must still have some of that in me if I can't even make bad choices in a video game. Does that mean I'm still a "goodie-two-shoes"? Speaking of gaming, a friend just sent me this quote this morning: "Computer games don't affect kids: I mean, if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills, and listening to repetitive electronic music." -Kristian Wilson, Nintendo Inc., 1989 (It's Pac-man's 25th anniversary, by the way.)
