Thursday, June 16, 2005 The Road Trip I took a road trip with my friend Joanna to Ontario last week. She had a wedding to go to and I wanted to see some friends. THURSDAY It was about the fourth day of decent weather in Saint John this year. As we left the city just after 5 PM, it was still 24 degrees celcius. We headed to Bangor, then across to Skowhegan, and then up Route 16 past Sugarloaf and to the border at Coburn Gore. It started to get dark around Skowhegan, so it was an interesting drive full of wildlife. We saw 4 deer, killed a rabbit and scared a baby moose. Oh, and killed a number of frogs. Glad I didn't hit anything larger than the rabbit! We got into Sherbrooke Quebec a little after midnight and crashed at the Delta. FRIDAY A leisurely breakfast at Mike's then back on the road to Ontario. We stopped at the Quinte Mall in Belleville to pick up a few supplies, and then took a pit-stop in Trenton so I could see one of my childhood homes. It was pretty cool to see! We got in to Ajax around supper time and spent our first night in Ontario with Joanna's friends Sue and Scott. They have a pretty cool place near the water. We all went out to a local pub for an awesome dinner and then called it a night rather early. SATURDAY The day of the Jim and Kim's wedding. It was hot. damn hot. I think the humidex was at 48 degrees celcius. I tried running but only lasted 10 minutes. With the heat and smog - even in the early morning - it was difficult to breathe. As Scott, Sue and Joanna headed to the Niagra region to the wedding, I headed out to catch up with Peter, an old friend of mine. We saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith then BBQ'd a tasty meal and watched Road to Perdition. It was nice to be able to catch up with him - especially since I'd been telling him that I'd visit for a few years now. SUNDAY Another blistering hot day. 33 degrees out. Don't know what the humidex read. Joanna and I stopped in at Yorkdale Mall but only hit a few stores before heading in to the Beaches to meet up with Jim and Kim for a tasty beverage and a bite to eat. It was great to see them and to hear all about the wedding. They had their wedding filmed by The Food Network for a new show called I Do, Let's Eat! - I think their episode is going to be aired October 1st. I can't wait to see it! They had a 5-course meal with wines at a vineyard. Scott joined us for a bit then Joanna and I went for a stroll through the beaches before heading abck out of town. MONDAY We said our goodbye's to Scott and Sue this morning. (Thanks again for letting us crash at your place.) Joanna and I stopped in to visit her sister and nephew for tea and crumpets and then headed in to Toronto to stay at Jim & Kim's. They were kind enough to let us use their place while they were on thier honeymoon. They live right near a Go station so it was really easy to get into town from there. We had planned to meet up with Peter for lunch (he and Joanna had never met) but he got called into work - so that left Joanna and I free to spend a bit more time shopping. We strolled through Queen Street West and stopped for an awesome sushi lunch. I don't think either of us wound up finding too many purchases - wich was good since we were both on a budgeted trip. At one point, the skies totally opened up and we got stuck in a huge thunderstorm, so we ducked into a restaurant for a glass of wine, and ran into Jennica! What a small world! It wasn't long before the skies cleared and we finished the 'shopping circuit'. We opted for East Indian cuisine on Queen Street - which was amazing. Well, the food was amazing. We wound up with a couple of obnoxious arrogant young financal guys sitting at the table next to us and alternately boasting loudly about their sexual conquests or complaining about their girlfriends. Yeesh. After all the great food and walking about, it was a releif to just head back to Jim & Kim's to crash in their nice cool basement on the uber-comfy futon! TUESDAY Our day started out with a pit-stop at IKEA before we headed off to Montreal. We had more great weather fro our drive - the temperature was 33 again, and I was thankful to have air-conditioning in my car. We got into Montreal around supper time and checked into the Days Inn on Guy Street, a block away from our intended destination: Bar B Barn - home of the world's best ribs! We totally stuffed ourselves and then decided to head out and check out the nightlife in the city. We stopped at one bar which was pretty mellow and then decided to find another place that was a bit more upbeat. Little did we know that the bar we entered, Thursday's was a "cruising" spot. There were tons of men there and only a handful of women. The guys looked at us like they'd never seen a woman before - I can't remember the last time I felt like a piece of meat. Not the most pleasant feeling. We decided to grab a drink anyway and wound up meeting a few folks that were pretty friendly and funny. So we stuck around and danced for a bit before dissappearing around 2 AM (early for Montreal). WEDNESDAY Tired and with slight headaches, we headed back to Saint John. The weather had turned and it was now about 11 degrees. Talk about depressing. It was all we could do to get back - we barely stopped for anything because we both just wanted to get home. We got back into town around 6:30 pm so we had enough time to do a bit of unpacking and get some sleep before getting back to the regular grind on Thursday. Posted by Dre at 9:58 AM |
