Cool Movie Villans
Lisa and I were discussing this topic the other day so I've decided to try and make my list.
The first person that comes to mind when I think of cool Movie villans is Gary Oldman. He's played the villan in many movies, but one of my favourites is his turn as Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Other that come to mind include;
- Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns
- Michael Wincott as Top Dollar in The Crow, among many other cool bad guy parts in movies (he has a great voice for it)
- Marton Csokas as Yorgi in xXx
- Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
- Karl Urban as Kirill in The Bourne Supremacy
- Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter
- Ben Kingsley as Don Logan in Sexy Beast
- Michael Madson as Mr. Blonde/Vic Vega in Reservoir Dogs
- James Spader as Steff in Pretty in Pink
Hmmm... I'll have to add to this list - any suggestions?

A Pleasant Surprise
I woke up this morning thinking it was Tuesday morning. It wasn't until I was almost out the door that I realised it was Thursday and the weekend really isn't that far away. :-)
I've had a busy couple of days. Tuesday night was a Theatre on the Edge production meeting, then Anthony stuck around to get photos for the poster for our play. Unfortunately, Semi was still in Maine, so he missed out on being the cover boy. Good news for Lydia though, who will now grace the posters quite fittingly. Since Semi wasn't around, we postponed our rehearsal. I joined Lisa, Anthony, John and Jay for a quick drink at Churchills (and a handful of fries) and then headed out to see Anchorman which was a good laugh.
I was out of the office and nowhere near a computer yesterday so I was unable to update my blog. By the time I got home from work, I essentially had to turn right around so I could make it to the SJTC Workshops. Faye presented Stage Makeup, Brenda presented Costume Design and Andrea Cunningham presented Stage Management. I was very impressed by the level of passion and expertise and professionalism by all of the presenters. Afterwards, a handful of us went down to Mexi's for a couple of drinks.

Once again wishing for 32-hour days
After work, I made a trip out to Value Village and found a shirt to "deconstruct" for The Sin-Eater. We're doing photos for the posters tonight. After that, I managed to get my printer working properly for the most part. Scott stopped by and dropped off some comics and helped me figure out how to print N-up format from iPhoto. I need to preview it in Acrobat first or else it'll just spin when it gets to 29%. Go figure. I then gamed for a little bit but was tired so I hit the hay early.

Mellow Weekend
I'd planned to nap Friday after work, but wound up puttering about my place for a bit. Melanie came by a little bit after 8. We headed down to O'Leary's for a beer and a chance to catch up on things. After that I hung out with Lisa for a bit but we were both feeling pretty mellow. We wandered down to Club Montreal, hoping to run into a few friends, but they weren't there, so we just called it a night.
Saturday I spent the better part of the day trying to get a few things done on my computer - clear a few files up, try to print some pictures from iPhoto but encounter printing problems. For some reason, the printer would pause almost a third of the way through each print job. Yarr. It was pouring out all day so I didn't feel like I'd missed much by staying in. I went to the gym a little later in the day, then decided I wanted to see The Bourne Supremacy. Lisa and Anthony and I headed out to catch the early show, but it was sold out, so we decided to see another movie in the mean time and then see the late show. The other movie we decided to see while we were waiting was Catwoman. It was terrible - it had potential but it totally flopped. Halle Barry was not at her best, that's for sure. I wonder who wrote the script for it. Terrible, terrible stuff. No doubt they test screened it to a bunch of 15 year-old males. At least The Bourne Supremacy was better, even if it did have too much shakey camera work. And mmm... Karl Urban as a bad guy - he's such a treat.
Sunday was another mellow day - and the weather was much better. I puttered about for the morning and ran errands in the afternoon, unfortunately not leaving myself enough time to go rollerblading. My evening was filled with rehearsal for The Sin-Eater and working on the latest SJTC newsletter.

Rolling Along
Tried out my new rollerblades last night and they totally rock! Rehearsal was pretty much a no-go because they'd replaced a lock on one of the doors to the loft and I didn't have a new key. Hopefully I can get a copy of one today so we're not stuck on Sunday.
Lisa and I headed to Chuckles for karaoke. It was super-packed. they had a contest going on and Lisa got was voted to go to the next level, so she'll have to go back next Thursday night. The cast from Shakespeare showed up and since it was so crowded they went to Jakes, across the way. We stopped over to hang with them for a bit before we all decided to go back to Chuckles together and enjoy karaoke even though it was crowded. At least with karaoke, it's interactive and lively! Needless to say, it was a late night and my hair still smells like an ashtray. I feel like the cigarette smoke gave me a hangover. I can't wait till the smoking ban in October!

New 'Blades
I picked up new rollerblades last night. They're on sale 1/2 price at Sportcheck. Man, what a huge difference from my old pair. It's like the difference between wearing a 15-year-old pair of downhill ski boots and a new pair of sturdy sneakers. Awesome. I'm going to give them a try after work today.
After shopping I decided to go to the gym even though it was getting late. At least it's a bit quieter at the gym when you go later. By the time I got out of the gym it was nearly 10 PM. I was both wired and tired, so I headed home to play more KoTR. My character, just starting out, has managed to earn a few lightside points for herself. It's an interesting game. Bit by bit, I'll eek my way through it.

A Step Forward
It felt good to see that we made progress with our rehearsal for The Sin-Eater last night.
Before rehearsal I went rollerblading a bit with Colin. I got my rollerblades about six or 7 years ago from a friend who wanted to upgrade. I think he had then for a good 4 or 5 years at least. Needless to say, they're a little old, and I'm thinking of getting a new pair for myself.
After rehearsal I gamed for a bit on the new xbox.

Splurge
I caved in and purchase an xbox yesterday. Thankfully the price has come down quite a bit - and you can get used ones at Electronic Boutique for about $160. Of course I picked up Knights of the Old Republic to play on it.
John came over and helped me get through a tough spot in Prince of Persia. Then, with that out of the way, I gave the new xbox a try for a bit. And of course, to round the evening off, I watched some more of Band of Brothers. Great series.

Geeking Out
Friday night I hung out with John and Melanie and discovered a new addiction: Star Wars games on the Xbox.
Saturday I made it to the gym for a full workout and then ran errands in the afternoon. That evening I barbequed with Lisa and Anthony. I made a greek salad and brought it over. (Man - just typing that is making me crave it again.) We hung out and I introduced tehm to Prince of Persia for the PS2. Anthony tried to help me through a tough spot in the game but he couldn't get past it either. Sigh. Then Scott and Suzy stopped by. We headed down to Mexi's and met up with some of the cast and crew from Shakespeare and then a bunch of us decided to go dancing at Studio 54. It was fun, but it also reminded me why I don't go out much anymore. I can't stand people bumping into me, the smoke and fake fog were horrible, and the leering guys surrounding the dance floor were just plain creepy.
Sunday afternoon I went rollerblading in harbout passage with Colin. It was fun - I hadn't been out on blades in about 4 years. This was Colin's first time. He did quite well. Neither of us flailed about too much. (Don't forget your wristguards if you plan to go rollerblading.) It was a good workout and fun! That evening, after flipping channels, I decided to head down to the corner store and see what I could rent. I picked up Band of Brothers and watched the first episode before I hit the hay.

Shakespeare and Friends
I got home from work last night with just enough tmie to have a short chat on the phone with Sue (I miss you guys!) and grab a quick bite to eat before heading over to the Gothic Arches to catch the opening night of King Henry IV (Part 1). After the show, Lisa and I mosied down to the Ale House to meet up with the cast and catch up with a few friends - it was great to see everyone!
The show is long, but it's good. I thought Elizabeth did a great job in choosing such a talented cast. You can tell a lot of work has been put into the characters, and I thought the play flowed very well. The costumes were wonderful (even if I found the armor to be a bit distracting - the glint of the lighting reflected quite heavily off the armor and the kings' crown). My only real complaint was the accoustics. It's a beautiful spot and it suits the play so well, but the room that they are performing in seems to muffle and echo everything at the same time. Luckily, I had read the play earlier this year, so I knew the story. But still, I had to really concentrate to figure out what a lot of the actors were saying, unfortunately. That being said, I thought they did a great job - the play kept up a good pace and was filled with emotion, and the times I didn't get distracted by a sore back from the folding chairs, I did get pretty caught up in the story. Great job, everyone!

More rain?
Is it me or have we had an awful lot of rainy and cloudy days this summer?
I think our first read-through for The Sin-Eater went well last night. It was a short meeting - just long enough to meet everyone, read through the play, discuss the rehearsal schedule and basically get started. After that I rented Girl With a Pearl Earring and got some pad thai from Terry's. The movie was very good, and it wasn't too long, so I had time to read for a bit before hitting the hay.

About to Get Started

Uhm... the weekend
Let's just say my weekend didn't go as planned. Colin and I are now no longer seeing each other. So I didn't go with him to Fredericton to cheer him on with his triathalon. (I hope he did well and had a good time.) Instead I stayed in town and tried to relax.
Saturday afternoon Lisa and Anthony wanted to get a new barbeque, so we sent out to pick that up and maybe get some groceries. It turned into a full afternoon of running around. After chowing down on food done on the new Q, Julie, Jay, Lisa and I went down to the blues tent from the SJ Jazz & Blues Festival to check it out. Lisa and I were both pretty tired and not in the mood for crowds and standing around, so we didn't stay too long.
Sunday was beautiful out. That afternoon, Lisa and Anthony and I went for a walk along Harbour Passage and then we met up with Anthony's mom and sister at Mexi's. After that, Lisa and I spent a bit of time sitting in the sun and reading in her courtyard. Around here you feel guilty if you don't take advantage of nice weather.

A mellow evening...
I had a mediocre workout at the gym last night. It frustrates me that the circuit area doesn't get used properly and that the staff there does nothing to enforce the rules (other than a little sign on each machine asking people to please avoid doing multiple sets). I got one set done, and then when I came back around to do my second set, it was full of people doing multiple sets.
After the gym, I met up with Lisa and Anthony for a quick bite to eat at Subway before we went to see King Arthur. It was decent - I liked the characters a lot, even though it wasn't even remotely historically accurate - a LOT of stuff was made up.

Theatre on the Edge
I don't know why, but I've been getting the dates wrong for Theatre on the Edge all along. The dates are Thursday August 12th, Friday August 13th and Saturday August 14th. Auditions went well last night. John, Dee and I figured out who we are casting for our plays and who we are going to ask to be our stage managers. I'd tell you who I've chosen - but I haven't told them yet. I'll give them a call tonight after work and the gym. As per SJTC: Second Stage rules, I've cast at least one new person, since I am an experienced director. Next up for me is to figure out the rehearsal schedule. I'd like to do our first reading soon. It'd be good to get the scripts in the actors hands and for them to start thinking about their parts.

Is it really only Tuesday?
Auditions went pretty well last night. we had about a dozen people try out for the 3 Theatre on the Edge one-act plays. I hope we'll get a bigger crowd tonight! I know it's not the best time of year to get involved in a play, and a lot of folks are still pretty busy with Summer Shakespeare, but rehearsals will only be for a few weeks in August and all of the shows look like they'd be a lot of fun to be involved in, so please come try out!
Last night a few of us went out for a drink after the show. Lisa and I got talking about books, and she lent me a novel, Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It's about a woman who's in Scotland who winds up travelling back in time a couple of centuries. Now if I can just find the time to read it....

I Love my iPod
I've been waiting for a couple of years now to be able to afford an iPod, and I've finally managed to save up and get one. I love it. I also got an iTrip to go with it so I can listen to my music in the car or over other stereos. It'll come in awfully handy at the gym, esp. since I've grown tired of listening to the radio station they usually have on there.
Don't forget that tonight and tomorrow night at 7 PM at the SJTC loft are auditions for Theatre on The Edge!

The Sin-Eater
It looks like I will be directing "The Sin-Eater" (written by Don Nigro) for Saint John Theatre Company: Second Stage's "Theatre on the Edge" August 16th and 17th! I am very excited - as I think this is a great one-act play. Auditions are at the SJTC loft next Monday and Tuesday and they're open to everyone.

Canada Day
I had yesterday off for Canada Day and what a treat it was! I slept in, walked around uptown a bit, had a tasty breakfast at Reggies with Colin, took a nap and then went to a BBQ at Kizzy and Jamie's. It was a very nice get-together and there were a lot of people there and a TON of food. I lasted till about 9 PM. At that point, Colin and I tried to start watching a movie but we didn't have the energy. I'm glad I made it an early night cause I STILL had trouble getting up this morning!
