Friday, September 29, 2006 Friday Feast #113 Appetizer What is your favorite herb or spice? Cinnamon! Soup Name a song you like but haven't heard in a long time. "Time After Time" - Cyndi Lauper Salad If you were to take just one minute to write down as many things as you can think of that you need (not want) to do, approximately how many things would there be? About 15 - 20 things Main Course Tell something interesting about one of your family members (nothing scandalous, please, just something unique). My father has survived 2 cardiac arrests in his lifetime. There is a one in one million chance of surviving a cardiac arrest. Dessert What's the latest you've ever stayed awake? Back when I was in university, I used to pull the occasional all-nighter. Now if I don't get my sleep, I wind up catching a cold or flu and paying the consequences. Posted by Dre at 8:04 AM 0 comments Wednesday, September 27, 2006 Read-through #3 We had our third group read-through of Noises Off last night and gave it a go with British accents. I was really impressed with the energy of the entire cast - as we get more familiar with the script, we are freeing things up bit by bit and having more fun with it. I can't wait until we're off-book and moving around! Posted by Dre at 8:13 AM 0 comments Tuesday, September 26, 2006 English Dialects So we're doing Noises Off with English (not North American) accents for the entire show, which means a lot of us have more homework to do to learn our accents. I came across a handy website called IDEA (International Dialects of English Archive) that has samples of different dialects from all over the world. I also did a bit of research on Wikipedia about Estuary English and Received Pronunciation, which was very interesting. Posted by Dre at 12:10 PM 0 comments Monday, September 25, 2006 Le Weekend Friday after work, I went for a run along Harbour Passage, then washed my hair then headed to Jay M's b-day dinner at Boston Pizza. I had planned on going to The Blue Olive afterwards, but I was tired and had a bit of a rumbly tummy from something I ate, so I opted to go home and go to bed. Saturday I was in the mood to clean. I even cleaned out some cabinets. I think I'd been at it for about 4 hours when Lisa called to see if I was still up for heading to the gym. We have worked out a fitness schedule that works around our rehearsal schedule and we'd both like to stick to it as much as we can. We had a good full body workout - by the end of it we were both pretty tired, but glad we'd gone. Saturday evening I was hoping to catch up with my friend Stuart, who was in town to sing at the NB Opera gala, but due to email server issues, we didn't get in touch with each other. So I enjoyed a fun and delightfully filling evening at Suzy's as she'd invited a handful of single female friends over for dinner. Thanks again for the amazing food and great company! Sunday was pretty grey out around here. I grabbed a bite to eat at Reggie's with Colin and then headed home to work on my lines. And I procrastinated by playing Animal Crossing. I then decided to get my act in gear and at least get out for the run that I'd scheduled for myself. By this time it was pretty rainy and windy, but then I remembered that I enjoyed running in the rain (it's rather refreshing). I ran Harbour Passage and a bit of uptown and wound up getting 35 minutes of running in. It felt great and I was so glad I got out! Sunday evening was a quiet one. I did spend a bit of time on the script after procrastinating some more, and managed to hit the hay a bit earlier than I'd expected. Posted by Dre at 8:10 AM 0 comments Friday, September 22, 2006 Friday Feast #112 Appetizer Measured in minutes or hours, how much exercise have you had in the last week? About 2 hours. I've been lazy this week, not to mention the fact that my knee and hip have been bothering me. Soup If you had to change your blog title to something else, what would it be? I have no idea. If I could have thought of something else that was approprate, I would have used that instead. Salad Name one television show you watched when you were 9-12 years old. The Flintstones Main Course If someone gave you $50 to spend with the one condition that it had to be educational, what would you purchase? I'd pick up a book on set design. I think it could come in handy. Dessert Do you tend to prefer dark colors, neutral shades, or lighter/pastel hues? Dark, rich colours! Posted by Dre at 12:59 PM 0 comments Thursday, September 21, 2006 Subscriptions Last night I headed out to the Saint John Theatre Company's Season Subscription Campaign Meeting. I hope we sell a lot of subscriptions this year - we have an awesome season ahead of us. Posted by Dre at 7:40 AM 0 comments Wednesday, September 20, 2006 Inspiration from TED The other day I came across a wonderful series of podcasts from TED (Ideas That Matter In Technology Entertainment & Design) that highlight speakers from past TED conferences. So I decided to check out the TED website and found some more great content on the TEDblog. If you want to be inspired, check it out. Posted by Dre at 12:03 PM 0 comments A Nice Quiet Evening Watched a few more episodes of Rome and re-read Noises Off and worked on my British accent. Gotta love a quiet evening now and then! Posted by Dre at 7:24 AM 0 comments Tuesday, September 19, 2006 Most Interesting After a tough day at work, I decided to enjoy a quiet evening in. First off, I remembered to vote. It will be interesting to see how a change in government will affect us. I hope they follow through on the promises they have made. I treated myself to pad thai for dinner, and managed to get hold of a copy of the HBO series Rome. When I mentioned to Ann that I'd rented it, she said she'd also been wanting to watch it, so I invited her over to catch a couple of episodes. She also brought along a lovely lentil soup - thanks Ann!! After watching a few episodes with Ann, I decided to spend the latter half of my evening re-reading Noises Off and working on my British accent. We are now doing the play as a traditional British Farce, so the entire thing will be done with accents. Posted by Dre at 7:25 AM 0 comments Monday, September 18, 2006 What a Great Weekend! Friday night I caught up with Beth over a beer. It felt like it had been ages since we spent any time together. Saturday was Melanie and John's wedding, which I MC'd. It was lovely. We had the perfect weather for it - a balmy 26 degrees Celsius in September! ![]() Saturday evening, on my way home from the wedding, I popped in at Alison's to say hi. She was having a house party for the girls while the guys were on thier burger trip. I was pretty tired though so I didn't stick around. (Thanks, Lisa M, for the lactose-free double-chocolate cookies!!) Sunday I caught up with Colin over a late breakfast at Reggies, ran a few errands, then curled up on the couch to watch the remained of season 3 of Nip/Tuck. I then caught up with Stuart, a friend from Toronto, over a glass of scotch at Churchills. And of course, my kittens were being cute and cuddly all weekend.... ![]() So, all-in-all it was a great weekend, relaxing and fun with good weather! Posted by Dre at 7:34 AM 0 comments Friday, September 15, 2006 Friday Feast #111 Appetizer What was the very last song you listened to? "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos Soup What is one company/store/corporation you would recommend that people stay away from? I can't think of any in particular at this moment. Salad On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how much do you enjoy having your picture made? Do you mean getting photographed? Maybe an 8. Main Course Besides a bookmark, what is something you've used to keep your place in a book? a small piece of paper, a receipt Dessert Name a food that you like that most people don't. liver Posted by Dre at 8:09 AM 0 comments Thursday, September 14, 2006 TV? I enjoyed a quiet evening last night. I gamed for a bit and then Scott M came over to do a bit of tweaking to my iMac and while he worked on that, I flipped channels. It was nice to see that that young Canadian lad won RockStar: Supernova. Flipping channels just reaffirms my thoughts about TV in general. I'd much rather just watch a full season at a time on DVD than deal with inane programming, repeat commercials and trying to align my schedule so I can watch a particular show. As it is, there are only a handful of shows that I'd like to catch up on. I'm currently working my way through Season 3 of Nip/Tuck. Other shows on the list of things I'd like to see include; Entourage, Veronica Mars, Rome (the HBO series), The Sopranos (I've only ever seen the very first episode of season 1 so I have a lot of catching up to do there), and I'm sure there are others.... Posted by Dre at 8:11 AM 0 comments Wednesday, September 13, 2006 Golf Tournament Yesterday afternoon/early evening we had a work-sponsored golf tournament. It was a perfect day for it as we headed out to the Hampton Golf Club. I was the 5th member of our team and had opted to just tag along and not necessarily golf, but by the time we got to the 5th hole, I couldn't hold back any longer. (I think it was Beth talking about how great it felt to connect with the ball that really made me want to join in!) I had a few great hits which made it all worthwhile. Well, that and the fact that I was golfing with a fun and laid-back team. :-) The other cool part about the day was that at one point, there were 15 ospreys circling above the 10th hole. It was spectacular, as was the view. Hampton is so pretty. Posted by Dre at 7:51 AM 0 comments Tuesday, September 12, 2006 Back into The Groove Vacation always seems to do a good job of throwing a bit of a wrench into one's schedule. Thankfully, I've managed to get back on track with my fitness regime rather easily. It's so easy to be lazy but when you have someone to meet up and work out with, it's a good motivator to get there. The hardest part of working out is getting started. Actually, that can be said for a whole lot of things. Usually, once you get started with something, you get into the groove. Posted by Dre at 8:10 AM 0 comments Monday, September 11, 2006 Weekend Update It was a pretty good weekend. My friend Renny from Halifax is in town to do lighting and rigging for the Canadian Country Music Awards and he needed a place to crash for the weekend. It was great to see him and catch up. We hadn't seen each other since Christmas. We stopped out at The Blue Olive on Friday night to catch Kizzy singing, but we didn't stay too long as I was feeling really tired. Saturday was a day of errands. I ran a few with Ann and then dropped her off so she could do laundry and picked Renny up. One thing that I did find that I hadn't planned on getting was a great deal on Band of Brothers. I've wanted that series for a couple of years and between the sale price and the FutureShop gift certificate I had, I couldn't resist picking it up. Renny had never seen it, so he spent most of Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening watching the entire series. I had planned to go to Elizabeth's Shakespeare BBQ where she was announcing the show she plans to do next year, but I was really starting to feel run down as the day went on, so I decided to stay home instead. By the time 7:30 rolled around, I remembered that I should have been at Melanie's bachelorette party but I couldn't bring myself to go. I hope they had a great time with their pole dancing lessons, male entertainment and dancing at a club afterwards. Sunday was another quiet day for the most part. We had a reading of Noises Off and it seemed to flow a lot better than the first time we'd read it. I'm really looking forward to getting started with rehearsals and getting off our feet for this one! Posted by Dre at 8:07 AM 0 comments Friday, September 08, 2006 Friday Feast #110 Appetizer Name 3 things that you are wearing today. Wide-legged black dresspants with light blue pinstripes, a black ribbed top with 3/4 length sleeves, a silver necklace which consists of three strands of large silver rings looped together. Soup Who was the last person you hugged? Renny. He's one of my very best friends and lives in Halifax. He is in Saint John this week to do rigging for the Canadian Country Muusic Awards and he stopped by last night to say hi. I haven't seen him since Christmas. Salad What do you like to order from your favorite fast food place? Feature Cut Combo with fries. Swiss Chalet. Yum!! Main Course What time of day do you usually feel most energized? I usually feel most energized in the evening. Dessert Using the letters in your first name, write a sentence. (Example: Sweet unusual spaniels are nice.) A new design realigns each asset. Posted by Dre at 7:52 AM 0 comments Thursday, September 07, 2006 Huzzah! A Great Vacation!! Let me start this by saying that if you plan to go to the States on vacation, you might want to make sure you have a current passport. I brought along my expired passport, birth certificate and photo ID and I wound up needing them all. At the very least you need your birth certificate and photo ID - at least until the new year, at which point you will require a passport. We flew into the Baltimore-Washington airport the day before tropical storm Ernesto hit. That meant that our day in Washington was a wee bit wet and windy, to say the least. ![]() We toured the Smithsonian Museum of American History and Culture where we saw things like Dorothy's shoes from The Wizard of Oz, a Jim Henson exhibit, some exhibits on America at war, and some TV memorabilia (the photo of the case includes Carol Burnett's maid costume on the left, M*A*S*H props, Fonzie's jacket and more...). This museum is now closed for 2 years as they plan to do some massive rennovations to that building. ![]() ![]() We braved the weather and made it over to the White House before we headed to the National Gallery of Art and then the Smithsonian's Air and Space Muesum. ![]() Essentially, we'd spent that entire first day walking. By the end of the day, our legs were killing us and we were soaked through. We kept a close eye on the weather in the hoeps that the storm would pass for Saturday... Saturday morning we were up bright and early to head to the Maryland Renaissance Festival. It was still raining off and on, but the winds had died down. Due to the weather, it was rather quiet that day. Also, a lot of the Festival was struggling without power for most of the day. I was fairly overwhelmed when we got there. There was so much to see and do that it was hard to take everything in. We spent most of Saturday shopping at the merchants stalls. There was a ton of stuff, including ceramics, jewelry, puppets, masks, costumes, walking sticks, magic tricks, games, wands, honeys, wood carving, a forge, a glassblower, shoes and more... ![]() ![]() ![]() Sunday and Monday the weather had cleared up and things got busier. We spent our time checking out the shows, following some of the town's storyline, and watching the human chess match and some jousting. Yes, real jousting folks! Oh - and yes - there were even elephant rides there.... ![]() The jousting was awesome: ![]() One of the town's characters, apparantly a descendant of Robin Hood (remember, this is set during the Tudor era): ![]() The O'Danny Girls were raunchy and hilarious: ![]() We were introduced to King Henry VIII, who was looking for a new bride (next up for him would have been Ann of Cleves): ![]() Probably the bext act there was Hack and Slash. They had a few different shows each day and they were hilarious! ![]() ![]() Jay got pulled up into a Hack and Slash show (involving apples and a crossbow) and I got pulled up into "A Bloody Drama" show (which required being the kidnapped maiden who saves her prince and I had to celebrate the winning by bellydancing). Each day ended with a pub sing and it was never easy to get a good seat (although we somehow managed to anyway)... ![]() All-in-all it was a wonderful festival and I am already hoping to get back to it next year!
