Weekend Update

Friday was a busy day at work that ended a busy week. I was pretty happy for the weekend as I had a lot of fun stuff to look forward to, starting with the Barenaked Ladies concert on Friday night. Man, they were great. Just as fun and personable as ever. They really are a show worth seeing! I also popped in to the Blue Olive for a bit after, since Opa was performing. I always enjoy the atmosphere there.

Saturday was a day for errands. I'd intended to go to the matinee of Fiddler on the Roof (at St. Mac's) but found that I was still out and still needed to get groceries as it was nearing 2 PM. Also, I really wanted to get to the gym. I wound up, however, eating something that didn't agree with me, so I pretty much just slept it off until heading out at 7:30 to see Script Happens. It was a vibrant set of shows, and it was nice to see everyone having a lot of fun with it!

Sunday was a wee bit slower than I'd anticipated. I started out by heading out to cheer Colin and Beth and Anthony on as they ran the Hypothermic (1/2 marathon from Mispec into town). They had great weather for it and they all did great! From there, I headed out to pick up a couple of things that I'd forgotten to get on Saturday. By the time I got home, I was starting to feel pretty wiped. I'd intended to spend the day working on set design for Cabaret, but wound up spending most of the day in bed with a fever. I half watched some of the Oscars but I didn't last too long.

Friday Feast #132

Appetizer
Where on your body do you have a scar, and what caused it?
I have a scar on left baby finger. I was 6 years old and had been at a friend's place across the streeet. She lived in an apartment building, and there were large green garbage bins out back. After we had supper, we offered to take the garbage out and put it in the bin. When we got there, some boys we knew from school had climbed the bin and were playing on it. I remember them joking about and trying to get us to climb up too. Well, before anythign else happned, I tossed the small bag of garbage in the one open part of the bin, and it turned out that one of the boys hadn't seen me and had decided to close the lid - and it fell shut just as I was pulling my hand out from dropping the bag in, and it just caught my finger. I got 6 stitches.

Soup
What is something that has happened to you that you would consider a miracle?
I don't think I've come across anything in my life that would be considered a miracle.

Salad
Name a television personality who really gets on your nerves.
I don't really watch much television.

Main Course
What was a funny word you said as a child (such as "pasketti" for "spaghetti")?
I used to call the utility closet, "the utidilly closet."

Dessert
Fill in the blank: I have always thought ______ was ______.
I have always thought freedom of expression was important.

Stage Manager for Cabaret

Well, it's official. I have finished my mini-vacation from theatre and I'm returning to stage manage Cabaret. I'm pretty excited about it - I think it's going to be a fun production to be involved with.

Before anyone asks about audition results, the last of the callbacks were last night and final decisions are being made now, so we should be getting back to people soon!

Leftovers: Last Week's Friday's Feast #131

Appetizer
What sound, other than the normal ringing, would you like your telephone to make?
As it is, I have a number of ringtones on my cell phone that are somewhat cheesy - like the Imperial March from Star Wars, the theme to James Bond and the Theme for The Pink Panther. I'm good with just a regular ring tone on my home phone.

Soup
Describe your usual disposition in meteorological terms (partly cloudy, sunny, stormy, etc.).
Sunny with a few scattered clouds. And from what I've seen, that seems to be most people's forecasts.

Salad
What specific subject do you feel you know better than any other subjects?
Art & design.

Main Course
Imagine you were given the ability to remember everything you read for one entire day. Which books/magazines/newspapers would you choose to read?
I would read books on things that would be useful in life but that I don't have enough interest in to normally retain.

Dessert
If a popular candy maker contacted you to create their next confection, what would it be like and what would you name it?
It would be lactose-free, probably dark chocolate and/or cinnamon and I would include the word "delight" in the name just because it makes me happy.

The Weekend

Friday evening I caught up with Kizzy and Stephen over a beer at Churchills and then wound up spending the rest of my evening watching 5 episodes of Grey's Anatomy (season 2) in a row.

Saturday I had a blissfully lazy morning and then got groceries and then stopped in at Jay M's rehearsal to give him some feedback on the show he's directing. The one acts are coming up this week and I can't wait to see them all!

That evening a bunch of friends went to see Ghost Rider and invited me along, but I just wasn't in the mood for it. I am not a huge fan of Nicholas Cage (although I did like him in The Rock and ConAir) and the idea of flaming skulls just wasn't appealing enough to me. So, I went to see Music & Lyrics by... starring Hugh Grant & Drew Barrymore. I was in the mood for a cute romantic comedy and it delivered. I find that Drew is great with picking and portraying very human characters that have a lot of flaws tht a lot of us can relate to - not just the 'big flaws', but stuff like awkwardness and self-doubt.

Sunday turned out to be pretty busy. I had a great workout at the gym and then headed home to get a few things done. The afternoon flew by and the next thign I knew, it was time to head over to Lisa & Anthony's to roll my TMNT RPG (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Role Playing Game) characters. Now, I am not at all familiar with the TMNT's, never having seen their films, or realizing that there was a cartoon or comic books, but when John presented the idea of the RPG, it sounded like too much fun to pass up! It's set in the future, when a lot of animals have mutated and become part-human. You have to roll for your character and we made a North American character and an Australian character. For North America, I'm a feral cat that's around 5'6" and 136 lbs. I am very strong and have human hands, legs and speech but I look like a cat. I walk upright and can use a revolver. My greatest strength is attacking with claws. Also I do not trust other humans or animals, and I am an anarchist. In Australia, I'm a3'4" 37 lb mouse that is a car nut/auto mechanic. I have full human hands, legs and speech, but I still look like a mouse. I have psyonic powers and can paralyze an opponent with my mind. I'm skilled with all aspects of mechanics (including robotics) and different types of communication. I also excel at acrobatics, gymnastics and hand-to hand martial arts combat. This character is more easy-going and self-confident due to the fact that I know my skills are in high demand. I still have to name both characters. UPDATE: The cat is Savanna and the mouse is Maxine.

Shoop, Shoop!

What a fun evening! Anthony pinged me near the end of the work day and wanted to know if I was interested in going to Poley Mountain to ski with him. Was I! I love skiing but it's never something I think of. We took off as soon as we could after work and made it to Poley by 6 and we were on the slopes by 6:20, he with his board, and I with a good set of rental skiis. It's a pretty decent deal for night skiing - a mere $27 for lift tickets and rentals after 4:30 PM. ($14 if you just need a lift ticket) I like the night skiing because it's not as busy. That means no lineups for the lifts, and the slopes aren't full of tons of people or carved up as much, even if only a few of the runs are open. Also, the view is wonderful. On a clear night like last night, you could see the stars and the outline of nearby hills in the background, and the lights of Sussex in the distance. Lovely :-)

There was a cool breeze, but we'd both managed to dress pretty warmly for the weather, so all was good. I think next time I head that way, I'll make a point of bringing food with me. We took a short break to get some food at the lodge but they didn't have exactly the healthiest or best quality of food choices. At least downstairs. After our break, we got a few more really good runs in before they were directing us off the slopes. As a reward, we popped into the loung upstairs and enjoyed a tasty beer. Aww yeah. It was pretty packed there. I get the feeling a lot of locals like to hang out there. Good atmosphere, but we didn't stick around long. It had been a full evening and we were both starting to fade a bit and still had an hour's drive home. Thanks again, Anthony! It was a blast. I love the feeling of gliding along in full control on a pair of skiis. :-)

More of the Same

Well I'm on to season 2 of Grey's Anatomy and it's gotten even better. I can totally tell that someone who has written for Joss Whedon is writing for this. It's awesome. I love the language and the storyline. Season 2 will take a wee bit longer to get through, as there are three times as many episodes as Season 1.

More Mellowness

I had a great workout at the gym with Lisa and spent another lovely and quiet evening in and watched the rest of Season 1 of Grey's Anatomy.

Otherwise, work has been busy with good stuff, I've made an appointment to see my dentist for a cracked filling, I can't wait for summer and open-toed shoes, I'm focusing on eating more veggies and paying off debt, and need to get focused on set design.

Catching up on Anatomy...

Grey's Anatomy, that is. I've never watched it but I've heard great things about it. I borrowed Season 1 from Jay & Lisa M and was hooked within the first few minutes of the first episode, and then wound up watching 5 episodes in a row!

I also picked up Season 1 of Rome and watched some of that again. I also finally got around to watching Syriana, which was fantastic.

A Quick Post

Things have been awfully busy and not much has been going on. It's been bitter cold and windy, which means that my apartment has been awfully chilly. That makes it awfully tough to get out of a nice warm bed.

Saw Pan's Labyrinth last night. Thanks, Scott M, for coming along and providing the drive. :-) It was really really good and beautiful but oh-so dark and creepy in parts too. I normally avoid scary movies but I'm glad I got to see this one!

Otherwise, things are busy enough at work that I'll be doing a little bit of OT. At least I'm liking the stuff I'm working on!

Squeeky Snow

IT would have been so easy to stay home and hibernate but I managed to force myself to leave my apartment and head to the gym, despite the fact that it was cold enough that the snow was squeeking under my boots. I'm enjoying the new Nike+iPod sensor system. It does a great job tracking my runs and it's motivating to see the results.

I hope all is going well for those involved with the auditions for Cabaret. Break a leg y'all.

More Veggies. Please

I'm trying to eat more veggies. It's so easy to fall into the laziness of having lots of carbs and not enough veggies, so I've made a point of trying to introduce way more into my diet. I picked up a few groceries on Saturday, icluding plenty of fresh veggies, and then chopped up a lot of them and put them into ziplock bags for later snacking. I wound up taking celery, baby carrots, and broccoli over to J&L's for the Serenity character development session (which was a blast - can't wait to play!). I also made a fun new dish to bring along that was a stir-fry containing chicken, water chestnuts, celery, mushrooms, bean sprouts and zucchini. It was a new recipe and it turned out pretty decent. (I enjoyed the leftovers for supper on Sunday.)

Friday Feast #129

Appetizer
What was one of the fashion fads when you were a teenager?
It was the 80's so big hair and spiral perms and shoulder pads were all the rage. I managed to avoid the wearing of neon and Madonna and Flashdance -inspired clothing that was popular at the time.

Soup
Name one thing you think people assume about you when they first meet you.
Man this is a tough one to answer. I think people assume I'm a snob, until they get to know me.

Salad
On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how hard do you work?
At work, a 7 or 8. Doing something creative (happens now and then at work, but more often outside of the day job) - it can be a 9 or 10. If I have passion for what I'm working on, I can get totally focused. I love getting in that zone.

Main Course
If you were given a free 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl to sell anything you currently own, what would you advertise?
My collection of Architectural Digests that I've been meaning to sell. I have them all from 1976 - 1987 and then most from each year p to 1994.

Dessert
Fill in the blank: I love to ________ when it is _________.
I love to run when it's 15°C and slightly overcast.

February Thunder!

Did anyone else hear & see the thunder and lightening last night? It had warmed up so quickly it's not a huge surprise. It's just odd to have weather like that in February!!

I had a busy yet quiet evening. I worked till 6:30 then headed home and got soem stuff together and went to the gym. I had a good run on the treadmill and then did an upper body workout. I then headed home and made a late supper. I was just finishing preparing my meal when I noticed the thunder and lightening. Whacky. I started to watch Mirrormask, which Lisa had lent to me, but I only got about 25 minutes in before I had to turn it off so I could hit the hay. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of it - it has a really cool style to it!
