Tuesday, February 28, 2006 Dag I was awakened this morning to my cats breaking glass. They have finally found a way on to the counter - and from that, on to the top of the fridge, where I've been storing my extra martini glasses (I don't have much cupboard space). Alas, one got knocked down and managed to smash across the stove, counter, floor, pile of dishes that were drying from the night before, etc.... So I shut Hunter and Grace in the bathroom while I spend almost an hour cleaning everything. Not the best way to wake up. I'm spending my free time this week gathering costume pieces for Sight Unseen. I know there are only 4 people in the show, but I don't think I had stopped to think about how time-consuming it would be to do costumes. I am glad to be involved with the show, but I won't be doing costumes again. Posted by Dre at 11:04 AM 0 comments Monday, February 27, 2006 Weekend Update In no particular order: - I rented "Heaven Can Wait" and "Zathura" which were both cute. - I caught up with Ann over a couple of drinks - I cleaned my apartment and freaked the cats out by mopping while they were awake - I got some extra sleep - I met up with Colin for brunch at Reggie's - I picked up some groceries - I brought the cats to the vet so Grace could have the sutures in her stomach removed - I played a bit of "Dragon Quest VIII" - I did a bit of work for costume stuff for "Sight Unseen" - I tried to bring my shoes in to the shoe repair guy on Charlotte Street but they were closed by 2:07 pm on Saturday afternoon and I didn't see thier hours posted anywhere. Grr. - I treated myself to a new purse Posted by Dre at 1:11 PM 0 comments Friday, February 24, 2006 Friday Feast Appetizer: Choose one: moving to another state, having triplets, or never being able to eat chocolate again. As it is, I can only eat dark choclate that contains no milk products. That pretty much limits my chocolate consumption. I like chocolate but I can live without it. Soup: Name a news story that truly shocked you. Recently the actor hired to play the "angry Scotsman" in the Alexander Keith's commercial had been arrested on charges of child pornography. Salad: What was your very first job? Other than babysitting when I was a teenager, I started working at The Second Cup at Polo Park in Winnipeg when I was 16. Main Course: If you had the chance to read the diary of someone you're really close to, would you? Why or why not? I wouldn't. A personal diary is no one else's business. If there is something any of my friends wanted me to know, I'm sure they would tell me. At least I hope they would. Dessert: What's something you're looking forward to? This seems like a simple question but for some reason I can't seem to land on one thing in particular today. I am looking forward to getting over this cold/flu and feeling healthy enough to get back to the gym. I'm looking forward to finishing Colin's painting. I'm looking forward to "The Crucible". I'm looking forward to improving my skills in whatever I choose to do. I'm looking forward to my next vacation. I'm looking forward to growing old. I'm looking forward to spending more time with people I enjoy. It's all about your perspective on life. I guess I essentially look forward to every single day. :-) Posted by Dre at 10:10 AM 0 comments Thursday, February 23, 2006 Getting Better Much to the dismay of my cats, I've decided to crawl out of bed and leave my apartment and try to re-join the world of the working. I'm feeling a lot better, but still not 100%. I had an exciting new combo of cold and flu symptoms. Glad I'm on the upswing, but it may be a bit before I'm pushing the envelope again. This whole sitting up and being lucid thing takes a lot out of ya. Thanks to Colin for the awesome care package of kleenex, soup, juices, purple peeps and for loaning me "The Firm" on DVD. And thanks to all of you who called to check up on me. :-) Posted by Dre at 10:42 AM 0 comments Monday, February 20, 2006 Weekend of Busy-ness Friday I rushed home from work and grabbed a bite to eat and fed the cats. Then met up with Shane to discuss costume stuff for Sight Unseen. After that, I got groceries and did a bit of shopping. By the time I got home, it was 9:30 PM and I was exhausted. I was also starting to get a cold. Saturday morning I played a bit of DragonQuest VIII and then headed out to the last of the Crucible auditions. We had a lot of folks out and it was a full afternoon. After the auditions, I headed over to D'Amico's for a bit with Stephen & Sandra, Kizzy & Jamie, Brian D and Kristi. Then I ran home to feed the cats, take some more cold medications and head back out. I had dinner with Colin and Joanna at Taco Pica and then we headed over to the Wine Fair. The Wine Fiar was decent. I seem to remember finding more wines that I liked last year. I had a goal in mind: to find some wines that I could enjoy sipping, not ones that I'd need a steak to enjoy. I found a few - both white and red. And no - I didn't get loaded - or even a buzz on, as I had the tiniest of sips of each because I still wasn't feeling well (despite all of the cold medications). It was pretty crowded and a lot of folks were really dressed up. I think I got about 3/4 of the way through the room before I decided to head home. Renny called and said he was in town for the evening. He had come down from Halifax with his nephew Tracy's band, Universal Soul, who was playing at Neptune on Water Street. Renny popped by for about 45 minutes, then he had to head out to the gig. Late Sunday morning I met up with Renny for breakfast at Reggie's. It was good to catch up with him, especially since I had to cancel my last trip to Halifax to go to the Tour Tech Party with him (that was the first time I'd missed it in about 10 years). I went home for a bit and tried to get a bit more sleep, then had to go meet with Stephen to go over casting choices for The Crucible. Man, what a jigsaw. (No, we don't have things ironed out yet, in case you are waiting to hear back. Don't worry - it'll be soon!) After that, I went home and gamed (DragonQuest VIII) for an hour before heading over to Joanna's for dinner. Thanks to Joanna, I had pizza for the first time in 5 years! I actually got choked up a bit about it, but then that could have just been from all of the cold medications I was taking. She made it with goats cheese (mozzerella-style). Not only that - she made 4 different pizzas and they were all different and phenominal! Thanks again, Joanna!! Alas, my cold got worse again once I got home, and I coughed through the night and woke up with a temperature. I've made it into work and I managed to get a couple of things done, but I'm fading fast. It's not easy to work when you have a temperature too. I guess I'll just have to catch up on some much-needed sleep. That's what I get for trying to ignore a bad cold by taking a bunch of stuff to mask the symptoms so I could keep getting stuff done. Silly me. Posted by Dre at 11:08 AM 0 comments Friday, February 17, 2006 Which sci-fi crew would you best fit in? You scored as Millennium Falcon (Star Wars). The world around you is at war. Fortunately you know how to handle that with the greatest of ease. You are one of the best at what you do and no one needs to tell you that. Now if only the droids could be quiet for five seconds. (pics) created with QuizFarm.com Posted by Dre at 11:14 AM 0 comments Friday Feast Appetizer: If you were a color, which color would you be, and why? Deep dark red - like a complex wine or port. ;-) Soup: When was the last time you went to the doctor, and what was your reason for going? I stopped in for a prescription refill last month. Not that it's anyone's business. Salad: What do you collect? Memories. I don't make a point of collecting items anymore. When I was a kid I started all sorts of collections (stamps/postcards/barbies/etc.). Main Course: What were you like in high school? Name one thing you miss and one thing you don't miss about those days. (If you're still there, imagine how you'll remember it in the future.) I was an over-achiever who followed the rules. I miss my friends from high school. I don't miss being a teenager. Dessert: Pretend you're standing in front of your home, with your back towards your home. Describe the view - what can you see? Trees? Cars? A zoo? Wal-Mart? Ashphalt street, sometimes has cars parked on both sides (it's one-way - although there are constantly people driving the wrong way on my street - I don't think there is adequate signage indicating that), parking meters, telephone poles, a brick building... and that's all I'm willing to descibe on ye ol' web. Posted by Dre at 10:27 AM 0 comments Wednesday, February 15, 2006 Auditions Tonight Just a remindder for anyone who is interested in auditioning for Moonchildren or The Crucible that auditions will be held at the Saint John Theatre Company office (on the 3rd floor of Brunswick Square - use the entrance for the office building on Germain Street across from Reggie's and then head down the escalator to the mall and it's on your right.) If you are looking for audition material or information you can find it here. And no, I am not auditioning as I will be working behind the scenes (AD) on The Crucible. Posted by Dre at 8:15 AM 0 comments Valentine's Day I've never been one to celebrate Valentine's Day, even those times that I was involved with someone. It has always felt very commercial to me. Although I do like the fact that you can get cinnamon hearts this time of year. :-) I would prefer a statuatory Holiday in February, but I digress.... This morning I brought my cats in to the vet to get fixed. I can't pick them up until tomorrow morning and I know I'll miss them tonight. I hope it all goes well. Posted by Dre at 8:14 AM 0 comments The weekend of "Script Happens" ![]() So it was a great & full weekend as we finished the run for Script Happens. I think we had a pretty good turnout, and I was happy with the collection of shows - they were all good scripts and I thought they were handled very well. I know that some of the actors were a bit stressed about the shows on Friday night (the pressure to put on a great show while knowing that there were people in the audience that they wanted to impress). I did try to encourage the cast of Coelacanth to have fun and relax and really communicate with each other. That's one of those things that you can tell someone, but they still have to figure it out for themselves. They struggled a bit at the start but they eventually got into the swing of things and pulled it together really well. I was happy with the pace and energy of our show. After the show on Friday, a large number of us went out to The Blue Olive to cheer Kizzy on as she sang with the band. As usual, she totally rocked! Saturday flew by. I met up with Bruce at the market for a bite to eat before I went out to run errands. I picked up a couple of things (blank cards and a potato) so I could make cards for the cast of Coelacanth. Then I carved a coelacanth in the potato and made a stamp for the cards. I had time for a power nap and a bite to eat before I had to be back at the Museum to do makeup for the shows. Saturday evening's performance was smokin' from each show - all of the actors seemed to be relaxed and having fun and communicating and the entire evening went really well. Kudos to everyone for doing such a fantastic job! We managed to pack everything up and bring it back to the loft and got the cast party going nice and early. It was a mellow cast party - as least from my perspective. I snuck out around 2 AM (thanks again Mare, for the drive home). Sunday morning (at 10 AM) I picked up Joanna and we headed to Joanne's baby shower/PJ party. It was really nice to see her and her baby Jake - who is absolutely beautiful. We had to leave early as I had to get back in town and get changed to I could go to the production meeting for Sight Unseen. I talked to Shane (the director) for a few minutes about costumes - and I'm looking forward to getting started on things. After that, I grabbed a coffee with Chad and then headed out to run a couple of errands. I made sure to get home before the snow got too bad - as it was coming down pretty quickly and blowing about a lot. Once I got home I had a little cat nap (with the kittens sleeping on me and purring loudly - gotta love that) and made some supper. Stephen stopped by for a bit and we went over everything in preparation for the Crucible auditions which are this week. Posted by Dre at 7:47 AM 0 comments Friday, February 10, 2006 Friday Feast Appetizer: What was a class or course you took while in school that you realize now was a total waste of time? Shorthand. I never use it. Soup: Who is the tallest person you know? Hmmm... I knw quite a few really tall people and I have a lot of really tall relatives (I'm considered short for my mom's side of the family). It's hard to say who's the tallest of the lot though. Salad: What's your favorite midnight snack? Drambuie. ;-) or some goats milk cheese on crackers. Main Course: Have you ever found money somewhere? If so, where did you find it, and how much was it? I found a $20 somewhere but it was a long time ago. I remember that I found it but I can't remember where I was. Dessert: Where would you like to retire? I have no idea. I would probably want to be close to friends and family. At this point I can't imagine ever retiring. Posted by Dre at 8:09 AM 0 comments Thursday, February 09, 2006 "Script Happens" Opening Night So we had our dress rehearsal last night and it went fairly well. I think everyone in the cast & crew of Coelacanth is set for our first audience tonight. Actually - I think all of the shows are set - they are looking great. They are all very funny and each one has a different style. I can't believe it's opening night tonight. Break a leg guys! Posted by Dre at 8:09 AM 0 comments Wednesday, February 08, 2006 It was a full evening It was a very full evening for the cast and crew of Coelacanth last night. We moved our set pieces over to the NB Museum and then got to work on fixing the end of Scene 1 so that it had a better flow. Then we waited around for a bit as we were the last team to do our techincal run in the Mary H. Oland Theatre. There's some pretty particular blocking in the first scene that we managed to tweak as we made use of the stage extension. I think it is coming along well. I don't know about the cast but I was happy and exhausted by the end of the night. I was home and in bed by 10:30 but my mind was still going so I don't think I fell asleep until midnight. I was sleeping pretty lightly when I half woke up at 3:00. Now the kittens know my regular routine - I usually half-wake up around 7 or 7:30 and if they are cuddly and purr loudly, usually that will wake me up a bit more. I'll pet them for a bit and then get up and feed them. So when I half-woke up at 3:00 AM, the cats didn't know the time, and they thought it's time to get me up so I could feed them. They were loud and purring and insisted on being petted for a good 45 minutes before they settled down. Thank goodness I don't get up and feed them if they are scratching at me or getting into things. When I finally woke up this morning, Hunter decided that touching me on the nose repoeatedly with his paw was the way to get me going - what a nut! Posted by Dre at 8:05 AM 0 comments Tuesday, February 07, 2006 It's Coming Together Last night the folks involved with Script Happens got together at the mini theatre at Saint John High and ran all four shows. It was my first opportunity to see the other shows and I was really impressed. All four shows run about 15 - 20 minutes long and they are all very funny. It's inspiring to see everyone doing such a good work with their shows and I'm really pleased with the selection of plays we have, as all four of them are comedies. This morning I took an early lunch and Chad & I headed over to CFMH 92.5 at UNBSJ (which you can listen to online by going to Shoutcast.com and searching for CFMH) where we were guests on Leanna's program "Sunny Side Up" to promote Script Happens and talk a bit about the Saint John Theatre Company and its Second Stage initiative. Also, Andrea McAuliff wrote an article about Script Happens that is in today's Telegraph Journal and you can find it online right here. So - don't forget - If you're free on Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening, I would love if you can come over to the NB MUseum to catch Script Happens - tickets are available at the front desk of the Museum and they are only $10 each! Posted by Dre at 11:29 AM 0 comments Monday, February 06, 2006 A Weekend of Theatre and Reading My one foray for the weekend was going out to Happinez with Joanna and Lynn S. after work on Friday. It had been a long week and I enjoyed the company and a chance to unwind with friends. The rest of my weekend was quiet in comparison. I didn't do much else on Friday night after I got home - I think I napped, read for a bit and played with the cats. Saturday morning I headed over to Stephen & Sandra's. Stephen and I went through the script of the Crucible and picked out the audition pieces. Auditions will be Wednesday, Feb. 15th, and Thursday, Feb. 16th, at 7PM and Saturday, Feb. 18th at 1PM. After that, I combed through his library of plays and borrowed about a dozen to read. When I got home, I'd intended to go for a run but I wound up taking a 2-hour nap instead. I guess I needed it. I had planned to go out that evening but cancelled my plans and opted for a quiet night in. I finished reading the Fionavar Tapestry Set by Guy Gavriel Kay. Then I read The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard, which was quite funny. Sunday morning I headed to the gym and then Reggies for brunch with Colin. I had a good wworkout and I'm glad I went. I like it on weekends when it's nice and quiet. After that, I got home and re-read Sight Unseen and took notes about costumes. Then I read Betrayal by Harold Pinter and then did a bit of tidying and then got a few things together for rehearsal for Coelacanth. I can't believe it's this week. Where does the time go? It feels as though we just started reharsals. Posted by Dre at 8:03 AM 0 comments Friday, February 03, 2006 Friday Feast Appetizer: On a scale of 1 to 10 (10=highest), how sociable are you? Seven I guess. I think I used to feel a lot more sociable, but over the years I've developed a bit more of a need for solitude. I like my quiet time. But of course, I love being around people. So it's a balance. Soup: Name 3 DVDs you currently own. LA Confidential, The Horse Whisperer, High Fidelity Salad: If you were to win a superlative award now (such as most talented, class clown, most likely to succeed), what would it be? Most likely to take on as many things as possible. Main Course: What is your favorite radio station? CBC Dessert: Complete this sentence: I believe __________ because __________. I believe I exist because I am self-aware. Posted by Dre at 8:06 AM 0 comments Thursday, February 02, 2006 It almost brought a tear to my eye Last night I went to see Brokeback Mountain with Joanna. The cinematography was great and the script and acting were very very good. It was a touching love story. It's definately a mellowdrama - lots of quiet moments and meaningful looks, not exactly fast-paced. I thought it was very good. It's the kind of movie that stays with you. Posted by Dre at 8:10 AM 0 comments Wednesday, February 01, 2006 Wednesday morning update Last night we rehearsed Scene 2 of Coelacanth and I think it came along quite nicely. Otherwise, work has been busy and I'm on day 4 of my headache that just won't go away. Yee-haw. Terribly exciting, non? Posted by Dre at 8:09 AM 0 comments |
