Book Meme

In the list of books below, bold the ones you’ve read, italicize the ones you want to read, cross out the ones you won’t touch with a ten-foot pole, put a cross (+) in front of the ones on your book shelf, and asterisk (*) the ones you’ve never heard of.

[I couldn't resist commenting on them!]

1. + The Da Vinci Code (Dan Brown) [good but it fell apart in the end]
2. + Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) [love it. Read it a few times. Lent it to Kristi recently....]
3. + To Kill A Mockingbird (Harper Lee) [Classic and a great read!]
4. Gone With The Wind (Margaret Mitchell) [found the movie good but a bit tedious.]
5. + The Fellowship of the Ring (Tolkien) [read it numerous times, starting in high school.]
6. + The Two Towers (Tolkein)[read it numerous times, starting in high school.]
7. + The Return of the King (Tolkein)[read it numerous times, starting in high school.]

17. Fall on Your Knees (Ann-Marie MacDonald)
18. The Stand (Stephen King) [I like the Dark Tower series and I enjoyed The Eye of The Dragon and The Talisman but otherwise, I'm not a huge fan of his work, mostly because he has trounle ending his novels, and I like a nice solid finish - or an awesome sequel]
19. + Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban(Rowling)
20. Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte) [love her stuff]
21. + The Hobbit (Tolkein) [of course! How could I read the LOTR series numerous times without having read this?]

The Visit

My mother came to visit on the weekend. She took the bus down so we could have a "girls weekend." It was good to see her but she was pretty sick - some really bad cough and cold and plugged ears (which made conversation pretty difficult). We got out a little bit, but the bulk of the weekend was still full of Cabaret stuff.

On Saturday, I took mom along with me as I got folks started on a musical rehearsal, and we stopped in at the Mocean dance workshop and made sure all was well with the cast. (They looked like they were having fun!) We then headed out to Black's Harbour to check out the very cool yarn shop, Cricket on the Hearth. By the time we got back into town, we werre pretty tuckered, so instead of cooking, we decided on pad thai from the Thai Hut in the Quality Convenience and then stayed in to watch "The Holiday."

We managed to get out of the house for a bit on Sunday, taking a short walk at the INP and heading to the vortex for a bit of shopping, then out to Hampton for a bit of a drive. We got back in time for mom to nap while I attended a Cabaret costume meeting. The meeting was good - log but very productive. When I arrived back home, mom was up and ready for dinner, so we popped out to the Ale House for steaks (which were ok). Poor mom wasn't feeling so hot as her cold developed, so we spent the rest of her visit taking it easy (while I worked on the model of the set for Cabaret).

I'd booked Monday off on vacation and spent the day working on the set model while mom alternately napped and watched movies. (It turned out to be a pretty full and productive day for me, but I'm still feeling the pressure to finish the set for Thursday's production meeting.) Mom headed home that evening and I went to rehearsal. I'm glad she came to visit, but sorry that she wasn't feeling well. Hopefully next time she comes down, she'll feel better!

Better Day

Yesterday was somewhat wonky all-around. What I didn't mention in my rant about the missing margerine was my lunch hour that preceded it. Colin had asked for a lift out to the airport so that he could get Beth's car out of long-term parking and bring it into town. I drove him out and headed back into town. Just as I was about to cross the overpass on the highway that goes over Rothesay Avenue, and just as I was passing a transport truck, 3 deer jumped out and decided to run bound across the highway. Man - talk about scary! I have never had such a close call before and I hope to not have to deal with that again! Just as all that was happening, my phone started to ring - but I didn't answer it, of course. I waited until I got back in town and stopped at a red light. It was Colin who had called - the battery was dead on Beth's car. So I headed back out to the airport and gave him a boost before heading back into town.

Oh, and by the way, thank-you Kelly - for the tub of Becel! :-)

The Missing Margerine

Honest to goodness, you would think that we lived in a civilized society yet there are things that happen at work sometimes that just boggle the mind. You see, we have a small kitchen/lunch room in the office with a fridge. I keep a tub of Becel margerine in that fridge and I have my name written on the lid in black permanent marker. Every now and then, I bring in a couple of pieces of bread and some soup from home, and I look forward to using my margerine to butter my bread. When I went to do this today, my margerine was gone. I don't understand why anyone would feel they had any reason to touch it. It was clearly mine, and it's not like it was going bad and needed to be thrown out. I'm sitting at my desk with mysoup and dry toast and I have neither the time nor cash to go and get a new tub of margerine (not to mention the fact that if I did have the time, my soup and toast would be nice and cold by the time I got back to my desk. Sure, I could reheat the soup, but how do you decently reheat toast?) I just don't understand it.

Talk About Handy!

Yes, I'm still raving about my new MacBook. I took it along to the Cabaret rehearsal last night and was able to make notes and start a props list, update the schedule and draft some emails while I was there. I didn't have to take a bunch of written stuff home and then spend the next couple of hours entering it in. Now, I still had some stuff to work on when I got home, but it was way less than it could have been. Yay!

As for rehearsals, we're just getting going on the acting rehearsals. This week is our week for text work, where we go through the text and work on the meanings and intentions and motivations. Once the dance rehearsals begin, I'm going to start attending those and the music rehearsals. Hopefully that can help with adding some cohesion to the show. It's going to be a busy couple of months!

Bliss

I had no idea how much I was struggling with my old iMac until I got my new MacBook. I can actually do a couple of things at once. It'll actually open apps that I couldn't open. I can even watch Quicktime Movie Trailers again. Thanks to Scott M for helping me get set up with a wireless connection and I have sweet freedom. In short, I love it.

Friday Feast #135

Appetizer
Name two things that made you smile this week.
The arrival of my new MacBook and some of the headphone chatter while shadowing Andrea C, who is Stage Managing The Glass Menagerie. (The show was great, by the way! Kudos to all who are involved.

Soup
Fill in the blank: Don't you hate it when ________?
you have shoelaces that won't stay tied?

Salad
When you can't go to sleep, what is your personal remedy to help yourself drift into Lullabyland?
I've realized that I think too much when I lay on my back, so I roll over to my side. Luckily I'm one of those people who falls asleep REALLY quickly.

Main Course
What is something about which you've always wondered but have not yet found a good answer?
How did it happen that as humans we developed self-awareness? What prompted this evolution?

Dessert
What is your favorite pasta dish?
I love pasta itself, but it's also a lazy meal for me. Since I'm so lactose-intolerant, that leaves me with spaghetti and not much else to choose from. But I wouldn't call it a favorite. If I could eat cheese, I'd pick lasagna. I used to love cheese.

Belated Weekend Update

Let's see if I can remember the weekend...

Friday I caught up with Chad over dinner. We decided to treat ourselves with good food, and wound up eating way too much at Suwanna. It always happens when I go there. We then headed out to Brenda's surprise birthday party. .It was lovely, and the slide show was fantastic. Folks were saying that the samosas and sushi were fantastic, but I couldn't even handle the smell of food after a big dinner. A few of us stopped in at Churchills for a beverage on the way home, which was a nice way to end the evening.

Saturday I got groceries and did some work on Cabaret production stuff during the day. It flew by. That evening, I went to see 300 with Kizzy and then we went and hung out with Kristi and Heather. Another fun evening. :-) Glad I saw the movie in the theatre - loved the style!

Sunday was a busy day of Cabaret as I finished tweaking the schedule (a big thanks to Sandra for her 8+ hours of work on it!) and heading to the musical rehearsl for a bit. After that, I ran a couple of small errands and then headed home and finished the book I was reading, Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay. I then got a bit more done on the Cabaret set design while "watching" A Good Year starring Russell Crowe. Funny that both the book and the movie turned out to be set in Provence.

Monday flew by. I spent the evening shadowing Andrea C with Glass menagerie cue-to-cue and then heading home to do some Cabaret production stuff.

Belated Friday Feast #134

Appetizer
What is your usual bedtime? Do you like that, or would you rather it be different?
11:30 and asleep by midnight. I'd love to get to sleep earlier but I'm not willing to give up any more of my free time in the evenings.

Soup
When it comes to advice, do you give more or receive more?
I probably give more. I don't think I go looking for advice that often, even if I do tend to talk through things I'm figuring out.

Salad
Describe a memorable meal you've had.
The BEST spareribs I have EVER had can be found at The Bar B Barn in Montreal. They were so good, that I remembered they were the best and it took over 20 years for me to get back there and enjoy them again - and they lived up to being just as tasty as I'd remembered.

Main Course
Name a work of fiction that affected the way you think about something.
I can't think of one work in particular that has done that. I think all reading affects you in some way. It can be inspiring, scary, thought-provoking, and so much more. I can't resist a good book that's hard to put down. :-)

Dessert
What is your favorite type of fruit juice?
I love pink grapefruit juice.

10 Weird Things About Me

I got tagged by Jenn...

1. I don't like peppermint candies or gum, but I do like spearmint.

2. I've had 6 adult teeth pulled (other than my wisdom teeth) to make room for the rest of my large teeth in my small mouth. I was awake for those. Let me tell you, it was not fun.

3. I used to cycle competitively in high school and Belinda and I won the the provincials for female cycling in grade 12.

4. I belonged to a modelling agency in Winnipeg but I quit when I got chewed out by one of the owners for walking to the bus and chatting with one of the other models. They considered friendships between models unprofessional.

5. I was a booking agent and helped run a talent agency in Halifax.

6. I studied 2 years of architecture at the University of Manitoba but I hated it, and subsequently, I cannot remember a single professor's name or course name - only a few skill & lessons and a couple of people stand out.

7. I keep a box of kleenex in every room in my apartment, thanks to allergies.

8. I'm 5' 9.5" and I still love to wear heels. And yes, I currently own 98 pairs of shoes and I make a point of wearing them.

9. I've lived in 7 provinces.

10. The first time I ever got to wear makeup was for a ballet recital when I was 7. After that, I had to wait until I was 14 before I could wear makeup in public.

Re-organizing

When I got home from meeting Stephen for Round 2 of schedule-planning, I decided it was high time to take a look at where I store my DVDs and books. I had been keeping the DVDs on a small shelf near the DVD player, but I had run out of room a while back and started to have to store some of them on another shelf. It was time to put some order back into things. My DVDs are now all on a shelving unit together (and in alphabetical order, of course). My books are now arranged within gentres, authors, and size. I know it seems picky, but I hate having to search for things. Order makes me happy. :-)

Scheduling

Last night, Stephen and I sat down to try to work out the rehearsal schedules for Cabaret. It turned out to be a more complex task than we'd anticipated, and wound up coming up with some questions to pose to Jenn & Richard about requirements for music and choreography rehearsals. So we didn't finish, but we should tonight. I hope. It's gonna be a mighty busy couple of months for everyone involved!

Weekend of Quiet Recovery

I made it in to work for 4 hours on Friday before I felt too sick and had to leave. I then spent the afternoon sleeping. That evening, most of Saturday, and Sunday morning, I worked on the set design while watching season 1 of Lost. I'd never even seen an episode before. I started off thinking that the series seemed good but pretty hokey. But as the season went along, I enjoyed how it was put together. Thank goodness I was finally feeling better, so I was able to get a few things done. (I was sick enough last week that I didn't even watch TV.)

Sunday was one of those days where I just felt a little off. We had a D&D game that afternoon, which, thankfully, went well. And there was a production meeting for Cabaret which was good. I think we got a few balls rolling on that side of things. It's exciting to see! I brought along most of my partially finished set design. Once I have it done, I'll take a photo of it and post it. And Mare, since I know you love set design, I'll keep you posted and you can come by and check it out. :-)

Unfortunately on Sunday evening I missed our book club meeting. We just finished reading Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures by Vincent Lam, and I'd enjoyed it and was looking forward to the meeting. But in my fever-induced haze, when I cancelled our Cabaret Production meeting last Wednesday and rescheduled it for Sunday evening, I had in my head that book club was the following week. I hope I can make it to the next one, and I hope that all who went had a great time.

Friday feast #133

Appetizer
What does the color pink make you think of?
Illustrations that I've done of happy pink pigs...
click for more information click for more information

Soup
Name something you thought you had lost, but later found.
My iPod shuffle. It's so small!

Salad
In 3 words, describe this past week.
Sick, flu, frustrating.

Main Course
What are you obsessed with?
I can't think of anything that I'm obsessed with at the moment.

Dessert
What kind of perfume or cologne do you like to wear?
I don't usually wear scented products. I work in a scent-free workspace and one of my co-workers has severe environmental sensitivities. On weekends, I sometimes use a little perfume (as in spray it and then walk through the mist) - either Coco Chanel or Obsession. Both I've had for over 10 years. I like the smell of both of them, but I too have some sensitivites towards scented products so I probably shouldn't even be wearing anything.
