A new show for StuckTV!

Yesterday I had a great lunch with Lisa and Kristi. Later that evening I met up with Lisa to brainstorm ideas for a show that we could do for StuckTV. We came up with a format, a name, and we even wrote the script and shotlist for the first sketch! Talk about a productive meeting! I am very excited about it!

We're calling our show The Uptown DownLo and within it we'll have a skit, titled Stuck in Heels with our character "Holly", who deals with a varitey of things (something different for each show). The skit will be related to our rant. Last night, Lisa and I wrote the first skit and created the shot list. Then we'll do an interview with a local artist/musician/performer/business person... and that will lead into a little chat about what's going on over the next little while in Saint John that peak our interests.

It'll be interesting trying to squeeze the time in to do the show because we both have pretty busy schedules over the next little while, but I think we'll be able to do it no problem. I can't want to get started!!

Mellow

I tried to relax last night. I needed a mellow evening. Even though there's a ton of things I could or should be working on, I figure I deserve a night off every now and then. So, I had a nap after work, then went to Churchills for dinner with Renny and Colin, then I read for a bit and hit the hay early. I felt quite well-rested when I got up this morning.

Need Coffee

I had a very full evening last night. I went to the callback for "Stella" and did my audition. I find auditions pretty stressful - and I hope this is the last of them for this part.
After the audition, I met up with Colin for supper at Churchills Pub, and we had a couple of delicious burgers. By the time we were done, it was time for me to head to the Somerset Pub to cheer on my friends who were doing Comedy Knights (their improv troup). They were quite funny, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of folks there that I knew. I didn't stay for too long, since Renny was coming into town. He didn't make it to Saint John until about midnight. We hung out for a bit and then I set up the futon for him. He'll be pretty busy today doing rigging and then lighting for Nickleback at Harbour Station.

I made it into work very early today. So between that and the late night, I'm already thinking about going home and taking a nap at lunch. Zzzzzzzzzzz.......

A Quiet Evening

Monday evening was nice and quiet. I had a nap, a healthy supper, watched Las Vegas, and then worked on my lines for tonight's callback. It sounds terribly exciting, doesn't it? I am looking forward to trying to relax a bit once I get this callback over with. I'm trying not to let it stress me out.

I guess I'll be heading over to the Somerset Pub later this evening to cheer on my friends who are doing a Comedy Knights reunion show.

Snowy Weekend

Friday evening, Colin and I had supper at Taco Pica and then stopped in at Quality Convenience to rent a movie. We wound up renting season 1 of "24" again, and we managed to watch 4 more episodes, bringing us to 3 PM. Only 9 more hours to watch....

Saturday I slept in then cleaned my apartment and got groceries. Colin came over for supper and we tried to watch the original Italian Job but found that it was way too slow. So we watched most of season 5 of Sex and the City instead.

Sunday morning I actually made it to the gym and did a full workout with weights. Then, breakfast at Reggies with Colin, then we headed upriver to hang out with Cliff and Shannon (and all of the pets). They went snowshoeing while I went over my lines for my Tuesday callback. Shannon made an amazing supper and we spent a bit of time in the hot tub before Colin and I came back into the city. It was only 10:30 PM and I was totally exhausted. I don't even remember falling asleep.

I came into work this morning and the social committee had a breakfast thing planned. I managed to make it in time to score some free food and a lovely gift (yep - more swag: a leatherbound notebook and pen - very nice stuff). I am super sore from my big workout yesterday. I'm also very tired. I plan to go home and sleep at lunch. Tonight will be a quiet night in as I work on my scene once again so that I'm more comfortable for the Stella callbacks tomorrow. I'm trying my best not to get too stressed out about it.

The Book of Ratings

Does your favourite chololate bar float? I got a kick out of this list of ratings for Canadian snack foods. I especially like that the ketchup potato chips are Old Dutch brand. When I lived on the prairies, that's all I used to get.

96 cm. of snow in one day!

That's what my parents got. It looks like my weekend plans to head to Halifax will have to be put on hold. Nova Scotia is still in a state of emergency, and I don't think the highways are in the greatest shape.

Up Too Late

That's right, I was up past my usual bedtime. I put my portfolio up last night. There's some stray code that's on it that I need try try to find and fix. Yippie. I tried to find it last night and it wasn't on the files on my computer, so maybe something happened when I uploaded it. Argh.

Then, took the portfolio section and made a copy and replaced the headers with a studioDRE header and put that up on my business site. I know it's not the portfolio I want up there. Besides the fact that there are the code problems that need to be fixed, there are sections that I don't want to have up there to promote for my business, such as photography, and digital design. I plan on having 3 sections: illustration, design, and fine art. So next week I'll work on that re-org for studioDRE.

It was already late and I was about to hit the hay when I decided to wash my hair. I figured it was best to do that then because I'd never get up in time in the morning to do it. I hate sleeping with wet hair. By the time I crawled out of bed this morning I remembered that it didn't matter much if I had bad, still slightly damp hair. We are in the midst of a very windy snow storm. A blizzard, some might say. Windy enough to take your breath away. Snowy enough to leave you soaked from head to foot. The storm is only supposed to last for the day though, thank goodness. I can't wait for Spring!

Portfolio Complete!

Ok, I know - it's been a long time coming, but I finally have the portfolio up. Whew!

UPDATE: I've also put up a temporary site for studioDRE, using the same portfolio.

Busy as a bee

Last night, after a tasty dinner at Swiss Chalet with Colin, I got back to work on my portfolio. I managed to complete one more section. Tonight I need to work on Pauline's caricature.

Monday night

I finished building section 2 of 6 in my portfolio. Then, at 10 PM, Colin came over and we watched Las Vegas together. It wasn't very good last night. They need better writers - and better storylines. There wasn't much of a story to it at all.

It looks like more page-building tonight. I wonder how much I can get done...

A Quiet Valentines Weekend

I started back at work on my online portfolio this weekend. I spent the better part of Saturday scanning more artwork in and fixing it up so it's the correct size and format. Talk about time-consuming stuff!

Colin came over for dinner, and he gave me a gorgeous stained glass kalidescope for Valentines Day. We then spent the evening watching the first five episodes of the first season of 24. Wow! What a great show! Edge of your seat stuff!

Sunday morning, after a nice breakfast at Reggies with Colin and Bones, we watched a couple more episodes of 24 and then I got back to work on my site. Then, Sunday evening, Colin stopped over again and we managed to get through a few more episodes. We only have a 4-day rental of 24s first season, and I don't think we're going to be able to watch it all. There just isn't enough time!

As for the portfolio, it's coming along nicely. I have one of six sections built, and I plan to try to work on it each night this week.

Valentines Vegas Gala

Friday night was the Saint John Theatre Company annual Vegas Valentines Gala. It started at 7 with cocktails and a casino and silent auction. You could tell that the folks who put it together put a lot of work into it. I find gambling incredibly boring and there was nothing at the silent auction that peaked my interest, and it was getting late and I was getting hungry, so I was pretty happy when they announced that supper would be in 5 minutes. Except that it wasn't. For some reason, even though the food had been brought out, they had some terrible Vaudvillian performers (who were going to be at the Imperial the following night) come out and put on a bit of a show. By the time they were done, and we got to the buffet line, the food was cold. Yarr.

At least the richard Kidd band was a nice treat during supper, even though the folks who were helping with the catering were pretty terrrible. One even came over and cleared Lisa's still full plate of mussles away. After supper, they had an auction, where Colin got tickets for us to see Death of a Salesman at the Neptune Theatre in Halifax, and a one-night stay at the Delta. After the auction, they listed the winners of the silent auction, then we got to listen to Tony Roma with the Richard Kidd band, and at the very end of the evening, they had another mini-auction with the play money that had been used for gambling - for a few SJTC items. I managed to score an assortment of SJTC swag (sweatshirt, fleecy vest, ballcap and travel mug).

The Red Fountain

This morning, Tom and I headed for coffee break. He wanted Earl Grey tea, and the Tim Horton's that we usually go to was out, so we walked down to Market Square to go to the Tim's there. The fountain in the middle of Market Square has been coloured red for Valentines Day. The Central jet now looks like a strawberry milkshake gone wrong, and the surrounding waters look bloodied. It just doesn't seem right. Although, I must admit that the hearts mobile above the fountain is quite cute.

Friday Five

1. Are you superstitious?
No. I do understand why some people are though. It seems more like sheer coincidence if anything were to happen, or some sort of self-fulfilled prophecy whereby a person somehow manages to psych themselves out and essentially cause some sort of accident themselves.

2. What extremes have you heard of someone going to in the name of superstition?
Hmm... because I'm involved in the theatre, there are lots of superstitions there. I can think of at least one person who is quite superstitious about any mention of the Scottish play.

3. Believer or not, what's your favorite superstition?
Knock on wood. It's amazing how many people do that.

4. Do you believe in luck? If yes, do you have a lucky number/article of clothing/ritual?
Not really. I believe in coincidence.

5. Do you believe in astrology? Why or why not?
I think it's fun, but that's about it.

Ready for Spring

Yep. I could handle Spring. Anytime now. I'm tired of snow and slush and cold wind. I'm tired of the snow ban and having to get up extra-early to move my car. I want to smell a freshly-mown lawn. I want to be able to walk to work without having to wear boots and a coat and scarf and gloves. Sigh.

Well, the callbacks for Streetcar were last night. I think I did okay. It's hard to tell. There was a bit of a mix-up and one person wasn't able to make it, so they'll have to get back together again with her probably next week. Hopefully it won't be too long of a wait after that for Stephen to have his choices made. I'm at least happy I made it this far.

A Weekend of Theatre

Wow! What a busy weekend! Friday night was the Opening Night for the one-act plays. We sold out to a good crowd. I was a bit nervous, but not too bad overall. It was a good thing that I did my own sound and lighting - to keep me occupied so I wouldn't get too stressed. The evening went well. It was nice to see that Sandra and Stephen were both able to make it - and bring William - who's cute as a button. After the show a group of us went out for a drink - we wound up at Churchills. I had a very tasty salad - wiish I could remember which one it was.... the Mediterranean, I think....

Saturday, I cleaned my messy apartment, went over my lines, and picked up and put together the gifts for my cast members. Then it was off to the NB Museum for our second and final night of performances. Despite the snow/sleet/rain/snow, we still had about a hundred people come out to see the plays, and I found that the audience was pretty receptive. I'm very happy with my cast. Their hard work paid off in the end, and I'm proud of the great job they all did! The cast party was pretty good - it was a bit mellow, and I wasn't really drinking, but most folks seemed to have a good buzz on by the time I left.

I spent most of the day Sunday working on my lines for the callback for Stella. I hope I do a good job tonight. I wish I didn't get so stressed out about it, and I wish I had more time last week to work on the scenes. Oh well, all I can do is go in and try to do my best and hope that my nerves don't get to me.

Original One-Act plays are tonight!!

I tried to do the Friday Five today, but all the questions were about risk, and I'm not a risky person. the most risky thing I think I do is speed a bit.

Last night was a very full night. I got out of work at 5, ran home, gathered my stuff, met Lisa and Anthony, and stopped at the Loft to pick up wooden chairs for our play, a blue light, and the wireless headsets (for one of the other shows that needed them). Then we ate at the food court by the museum. I had a tasty smoked meat sandwich and fries. Scott, BLee and Tim joined us. Once our food was scarfed down, our cast finished our cue-to-cue, and by then it was 7. The dress rehearsal was started, and during the first show, we went back out to the food court to do an Italian. Our show went pretty well, although we really have to crank up the volume. Once we were done, a bunch of us stopped in at Churchills for a drink and chatted about the evening.

It looks (and feels) like I have a bit of tonsilitis. I think is viral, not bacterial, which means I should be able to get rid of it on my own within a couple of weeks. Sigh. So tired of not feeling 100%. At least with some Advil and a few throat drops, I feel relatively fine.

Cue-to-cue... to be continued

I had a busy and productive day at work yesterday. After work, I headed home to grab some toast for supper, then it was off to cue-to-cue at the NB Museum. Our group was last. We didn't have enough time to finish our cue-to-cue, so we're going in early tonight to try to finish it before we do the dress rehearsal. Yippie. I think Anthony will be filming the dress rehearsal tonight. That'll be cool.

After cue-to-cue last night I was exhausted. There was a bunch of stuff I wanted to do but I wound up going to bed instead. I can't believe it's already the week of the show. Where did the time go? I've really been enjoying directing it. I'm fortunate that I have such a good cast. They've all been very hard-working and I'm sure they'll do a great job! It also helps to be working on a well-written play that Scott wrote. It's definately a different perspective of a show when you're directing it, as opposed to when you're acting in it. It's a great learning experience. I am looking at the overall picture and trying to fit all the peices together so that it matches what I have in my head. I'm looking forward to doing it again sometime.

Evening off... mostly

I managed to make it to the gym after work for a cardio workout. Then home to go over scenes for callbacks next week, and I moved my computer over to the new desk, but I haven't hooked everything back up yet. At 7:30, I picked Colin up and we headed over to Swiss Chalet to meet up with Cliff and Shannon for dinner. Shannon bailed after supper, and the remainder of us went to see The Big Bounce which was pretty bad and a bit weird.

The run-through

Now that Chloe the cat has gone back home to her rightful owner Tom, my apartment seems a bit empty. There was no one there to greet me at the door when I got home from work. Who would have thought that over the course of a few days I'd get used to having this companion in my home. I'd have a cat of my own, but I'm allergic to them. I couldn't imagine spending the next 10-15 years taking Clariton every day so I could cope. Oh well. At least I won't miss the cat hair on everything (once I get things cleaned up) and the litterbox in the kitchen. Yes, my apartment is small enough that the only space I had for the litterbox was in the kitchen. Phew!

I made a very quick meal last night, consisting of left-over steamed veggies and some lemon-dill haddock from the market. After I scarfed that down, I headed over to the loft for a 6 PM rehearsal. We spent the first few minutes discussing the kerfluffel over the exposure of Janet Jackson's breast, and then we got down to work. Our cast needed to do an Italian. For those of you who don't know what an Italian is, it's when you go through the lines in the script quickly (preferably with you eyes closed) and without emotion. It's a great exercise to help remember lines. We did two Italians. By 7 PM, the other casts started showing up, and by 7:30 we got started with running the shows. It went quite well. I enjoyed seeing the other shows and what they'd done with them. I know some folks were a little stressed about it because they still didn't have all of their lines down pat, but I thought they did very well. At the end of the evening, we got to discussing the shows and decided that we'd rearrange their order, so that Doomsday Clock is last.

After the run-through, a few of us headed down to Churchills for a tasty beverage. They make excellent caesars - with a spicy green bean. I had one virgin caesar and then bowed out early so that I could get home, and so that Colin could come over with my new IKEA shelving brackets and a taped copy of Las Vegas (since I'd missed it when I was at rehearsal).

IKEA/Fredericton/Calendar/Superbowl

The stuff I ordered from IKEA came in on Friday. Yay! I set the desk up and it looks great! I'll move my computer over to it and then get to the shelves soon. Then I'll have my drafting table free.

Colin and I headed to Fredericton for a few hours on Saturday. We went to Chapters, where I picked up 5 great books for only $15!! After Chapters, we stopped in at Strange Adventures and Radical Edge, and then stopped in to visit Colin's friends David and Gail (and Thomas and Rufus) for a bit before we headed back to SJ. Saturday evening was a quiet night in as Colin watched xXx and I tried to get started on the calendar for Doomsday Clock, although I wound up with printer problems instead.

Sunday morning I got up early and watched Seabiscuit, which I thought was very good. Then I headed out to Staples and picked up more ink for my printer and an office chair to go with my new IKEA desk. I spent the rest of the afternoon printing and cutting and rubber cementing things in order to make the calendar. I got about 2/3 of it done and then headed out to rehearsal. After rehearsal (which went well) I finished the calendar while watching the Superbowl (which was great!). I stayed up, barely able to stay awake, and watched most of Survivor All Stars, but I couldn't stay awake for the whole show.
