Weekend Update

After work on Friday, I finally got a chance to get out and check out the karaoke that Lisa has been hosting at the Somerset. I headed over with Beth and neither of us got up to sing anything. Saturday I ran a few errands, went to the gym, then did a bit of cleaning (I needed to clean out my art supply shelving unit in my living room so I could make room for soem other items - talk about a big job - I felt like I barely made a dent.) That evening Julie A was having a house party in Grand Bay. I was going to give Lisa and Anthony a lift out but Lisa's grandfather took a turn for the worse and was in the hospital so they had to head out there instead (Lisa, I hope everything is OK.) I headed out on my own and wound up catching up for a bit with Michelle, BT and Ryan (happy belated b-day by the way, Ryan!) then I left early. I was starting to fade after having had a pretty full day. I was up around 7:00 on Sunday morning and got straight to work on cleaning out my art supply shelving unit. I managed to get rid of a few large bags of garbage - just stuff that I don't need anymore. I managed to make room for some new stuff - like scrapbooking items and scripts. I finished around 4:30 PM and now my living room sparkles! Part of my motivation was the fact that I have relatives coming to stay later this week. Sunday evening I went for dinner with Beth at Swiss Chalet and then we went to see Monster in Law. Man, that was a funny movie - much better than I'd expected! I think I needed a bit of silly for my weekend. :-) I got home around 9-ish and got to work on the list of necessary makeup items for Julius Caesar. While I was working on that, I put G.I. Jane on in the background. Love that movie.

Oh yeah, and congrats to Joanna on running a personal best on her leg in the Cabot Trail Relay!

TGIF - Again :-)

I had a tasty traditional burger at Churchills last night as I hung out with Lisa, Anthony, Micah, Mike and Mike. It was good to get out for a bit and relax. I had planned to do dinner with Joanna and Colin at the new sushi place on Waterloo Street, but our plans fell through and we decided to reincheck. It was good timing on Anthony's behalf as he invited me to meet up with them at Churchills about 5 minutes later!

Later that evening, I actually managed to get a bit more cleaning done around my apartment. I had started cleaning out a closet and a stack of papers earlier this week but I'd only gotten half way through it. It felt good to finally get things cleaned up. I'm all done with my room, but I still have a stack of papers (albeit a much smaller one) to finish sorting. At least that is currently tidied up enough I can leave it for a bit while I work on other things. I've been trying to get a few things cleaned out before my aunt and uncle come to visit next week.

I'm glad it's almost the weekend. I've been looking forward to it. I have a fair amount on my list of things to do, but thankfully half of the list are social activities!

No more rain please.

There isn't too much going on that's terribly new around here. Last night was our second class for the Scene Study Workshop, and that went fairly well. A few of us stopped in at Churchills for a drink afterwards and didn't stay too long. I have a bit of a cold (thank goodness for cold medications!) so I probably should have just gone home and gone to bed. But still, I was glad to get out and socialize for a bit.

A Rather quiet night....

I gave Anthony a lift out to Futureshop so he could pick up his new fancy lightsaber, then I headed home to do my scene study homework. I hit the hay early because I was starting to come down with a bit of a cold. I am already feeling better today!

Tuesday is Chooseday

Would you rather:

1.) spend 76 hours at a rave OR at a work/education conference?
I would much rather spend 76 hours at a conference and learn something from it. Besides, I have a hard time with crowds and anything really loud. I've never been interested in checking out a rave in the first place.

2.) star in your own sitcom that only lasts one season OR star in one hit movie?
Hmm... good question. I think I'd go for the hit movie. I'm guessing less time spent filming for a larger paycheque.

3.) drive a winnebago everywhere for a month OR drive a scooter?
I'll take the scooter - less cost for gas and easier to park. Since the weather is warming up, it would be fun to drive!

4.) drink a shot of laundry detergent OR a glass full of white vinegar?
Uh- how toxic is laundry detergent? I'll take the vinegar, thanks. Of course, it helps that I like vinegar in the first place.

Long Weekend Update

I hung out with Colin and Joanna a bit over the weekend. Thanks again for the wonderful dinner, Joanna! Joanna and I stopped in at Beth's on Saturday night and met her visiting parents and a few of her friends from Hampton. Then we went for a nice dinner at D'Amico's then to the Imperial to see The Sunshine Boys. After the show, I popped in at the cast party for a short time. I'd really enjoed the show. I cleaned out my kitchen cupboards and fridge, scrubbed the kitchen floor then polished it, cleaned the washroom, started cleaning out a bedroom closet and got about half way through sorting through another pile of stuff that had been growing since last year. Oh, and I saw Revenge of the Sith for a second time, even though I could barely stay awake through it. All in all, I could have used another day off - so I could finish sorting through stuff and get my apartment clean again. At least it's a short work week!

Friday Feast #48

Appetizer:
Approximately how many hours per day do you spend watching television?
Maybe an hour. therre are lots of days I don't watch any TV. I prefer to watch movies on DVD. I get too impatient for commercials. Also, there aren't too many shows that I really like. (Did anyone else catch CSI last night? It was gripping!!)

Soup:
Which colors decorate your kitchen?
My kitchen floor consists of deep red and cream tiles. I've painted the walls and cabinets in "Pittsfield Bluff" from the Historical Colours collection at Benjamin Moore. It perfectly matches the cream tiles and the counter.

Salad:
Name 2 brand names you buy on a regular basis, and what do you like about them?
(This one sounds like the 10 brands from earlier this week, so like Jenn, I'll pick other ones.)
- Toyota: I'm on a roll. My first car was an Echo and my current vehicle is a Matrix. Does that count as regular purchases?
- RW & Co.: I'll even drive to Moncton for my fix.

Main Course:
What is your biggest fear?
Living for years in excruciating pain.

Dessert:
If you could wake up tomorrow and find yourself in another location, where would you want to be?
Minas Tirith. LOL. No, seriously, uh - maybe somewhere warm and exotic, like Bora Bora, or Greece - or back to Andalucia - or Morocco.... (I could use some sun and heat - I'm getting tired of the rain and chilly winds.)

Bonus Birthday Question:
What's your favorite flavor of birthday cake?
Black Forest? Chocolate? Oh - that one that Suzy made for the last dinner party was pretty awesome! When I was a kid I liked cherry cheese cake. Now I'm happy with pretty much any cake as long as it's lactose-free.

Almost Incapacitating

Lately I've had a fairly large list of things to do and that has left me feeling a bit overwhelmed. Most of the time I have no problem ploughing through things and I like to keep busy but lately I've been feeling like I should take a break (even if I feel bad for not having an uber-productive evening or two) and I haven't wanted to do a darn thing. Unfortunately that includes energy to cook proper meals, get to the gym or even stay in touch with friends. I get tired of planning and booking my time and just want to stay in and veg. I feel like I'm being pulled in a thousand directions (even if most of the pulling is from my very own list of things to do.) Thankfully I've at least been keeping up with eating decently. So my apologies to my friends I haven't been keeping in touch with lately. I think I'll allow myself a bit more time to relax and then I should prioritize my list and just start working on things one at a time. And as for hanging out with friends, I know I have a couple of things booked over the next little while, but for the most part I would prefer to go with the flow. And hopefully that way I'll be able to catch up with y'all.

On a side note, I've also been looking for some nice pointy-toed pumps in bright colours but I've been having trouble finding anything decent in this sity. I may have to wait 'till I go to Toronto. Sigh. It's tough living in a small city when you get somethng in your head but can't find it around here. Shoes aren't the kind of thing I like to shop for online, since I like to make sure they are comfortable before I purchase them (and before you ask, I have found pointy toed heels that are comfortable!)(/em end rant)

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

I went to the midnight showing last night and I really enjoyed it. It was much better than the last 2. It's worth seeing in the theatre because there is a lot to take in. Guess I'll need a nap at lunch today....

Ten on Tuesday

10 Brand Names You Can't Live Without:

1.) Apple computers. It's what I use at work and at home. Once you go Mac....
2.) Adobe Photoshop. You name it you can do it to an image with this puppy.
3.) Colgate toothpaste. I prefer the classic white stuff to any of the gels.
4.) M.A.C eyeshadows. It doesn't move and the colours are amazing!
5.) Almay non-oily eye makeup remover. I swear by it!
6.) xBox. For a gamer like me, it's an essential. It also helps that the KOTOR are made for it....
7.) Playstation. I have not yet gotten a PSP, but I'm still loving my PS2. Ton of great games for this....
8.) Alcon Opti-free Express. Contact lens solution for lazy lens-cleaners.
9.) Lagostina cookware. (Now I think Paderno is great - I just can't afford a whole set of their pots and pans.)
10.) Soy Dream Soy Milk. Lactose-free and nutrient-enriched. I still recommend taking Calcium Magnesium supplements.

Gangster No. 1

Last night I watched Gangster No. 1 starring Malcolm McDowell and Paul Bettany. I'm glad I saw it. Well - the first 1/2 of it before it REALLY slowed down. I thought Paul Bettany did an amazing job. He was very intense and charismatic and had barely any lines. Too bad the rest of it dragged so much.

Weekend Update

Friday afternoon I got my second pedicure ever. It was nice and I like the colour ("It's All Greek to Me") but I wouldn't have gone if it wasn't for the social aspect. A large group of women from work decided to get together for pedicures and then a girl's night out. It was a fun evening - and a nice chance to get to know a few of the women from work a bit better.

Saturday morning I got up bright and early and worked on a logo for the SJTC. I took a break for lunch then went back to work on it. Then I headed upriver with Colin - who was heading up to mow the expansive grounds. I enjoyed some quiet time and read the play that my workshop scene is from. Then for supper, Joanna and I headed to Hampton to hang out with Beth. She spoiled us with goats cheese and red pepper jelley and a fresh baguette followed by fresh lobster then pesto pasta. Yum! That was such a relaxing evening - great company, great food, great atmosphere. Thanks, Beth for the great meal and comapny - and for letting me nab a bunch of rhubarb from your garden! On the way back into the city, Joanna and I stopped in at Blockbuster and picked up some movies to add to our collections. I was tired when I got home but I managed to stay up to watch The Horse Whisperer - which is 2 hours and 40 minutes long, but oh so good. I've heard that it's slow but I didn't think that it was - like the other movies that Robert Redford has directed, I thought it was lyrical.

Sunday was a day of getting things done; cleaning, laundry, baking things with the rhubarb that I'd scored from Beth. I made a rhubarb crumble with a (lactose-free) brandy cream sauce, and then had enough left over to make a rhubarb merangue pie. Even though I didn't make my merangue fluffy enough, I still prefer the taste of the pie to the crumble. Both recipies came out of Grand Slam!, one of the Best of Bridge books. The baking took longer than I'd anticipated so I didn't get as much done as I'd wanted to on Sunday. I had a quiet evening - a bite to eat at Swiss Chalet then watched We Were Soldiers which was OK.

Friday Feast #47

Appetizer:
Whose intelligence do you find intimidating?
Hmm... I don't think I've ever found someone else's intelligence intimidating. Inspiring, maybe. But not intimidating. There are lots of really bright folks out there - and we all have different types of intelligence (I'm an ENFP according to the Jung - Myers-Briggs typological approach.)

Soup:
Name something you've done that surprised yourself.
Gotten involved in theatre. Before I tried out, I never would have guessed that I'd have anything to do with acting. Now I'm addicted to it. I'm still surprised by it.

Salad:
List 3 people whom you have only "met" online, but consider good friends.
Alas I haven't really met people online. Well, I guess there were a couple when I was playing FFXI, but I wouldn't consider them pals or anything.

Main Course:
Where is the dirtiest place you've ever been?
As in filth? Uh - I did swim in Lake Ontario years ago. It was when we were living in Trenton, and at the time the Trent waterway was one of the most polluted in Canada. Nothing like the waters surrounding the Saint John uptown peninsula though. The dirtiest I've ever been would probably be after a week-long camping trip where we didn't have access to showers - and were only able to sponge-bath. With the bug-spray and the sunblock and dirt from doing things like orienteering exercises and gathering firewood, it was difficult to scrub it all off with a quick sponge-bath. I was pretty grubby when I got home from that.

Dessert:
What is the best example of "perfection" that you can think of?
Nature.

Rolling Along

As the week continues to roll by, I continue to hope for better weather on the weekend. Things have been realtively busy and quiet, and I haven't had too much to report. I saw Heist last night. I really enjoyed it. It's a David Mamet film, and like the rest of his work I found it very entertaining. Witty dialogue and a lot of fast-paced twists and turns. Tonight is our first class for the Advanced Scene Study Class. I'm looking forward to it - it feels like it has been a while since I stretched those muscles.

The Bad Side

Last night I took a bit of time out of my evening to unwind and decided to game for a bit. I have a few games for the xbox where you can create a character that can make good or evil choices. So far I'd played the games with characters that were very good but I've heard it's a lot more fun to create charaters that are evil, so I decided to give it a try. Alas, I don't make a very good bad guy so far. I played for a bit in Knights of the Old Republic, and then tried it for a bit in Fable. Each time, when faced with a choice, I had a really hard time making the "bad" choice. It wasn't long before I gave up on that and called it a night.

This makes me think back to what a goodie-two-shoes (where does this term come from anyway?) I was when I was growing up. I think I only got in trouble a couple of times - throwing a tantrum when I was 3 years old, and then late for and early evening curfew once when I was about 12 years old. I was always afraid that I'd disappoint people, and I guess I must still have some of that in me if I can't even make bad choices in a video game. Does that mean I'm still a "goodie-two-shoes"?

Speaking of gaming, a friend just sent me this quote this morning:
"Computer games don't affect kids: I mean, if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills, and listening to repetitive electronic music." -Kristian Wilson, Nintendo Inc., 1989
(It's Pac-man's 25th anniversary, by the way.)

Finally got around to watching the remainder of Band of Brothers last night. If you haven't seen this series from HBO, you really should rent this box set and take the time to watch it.

You Were a Little Girl in the 70's if...

• You wore that rainbow shirt that was half-sleeves, and the rainbow went up one sleeve, across your chest, and down the other.

• You made baby chocolate cakes in your Easy Bake Oven. You washed them down with snow cones from your Snoopy Snow Cone Machine.

• You had that Fisher Price Doctor's Kit with a stethoscope that actually worked.

• You owned a bicycle with a banana seat and a basket.

• You even owned roller skates with metal wheels.

• You thought Gopher from Love Boat was cute. (Admit it!)

• You had nightmares after watching Fantasy Island.

• You had rubber boots for rainy/snowy days - remember Moon Boots (you then advanced to Duck Shoes in the 80s)?

• You had either a "bowl cut" or a "pixie", not to mention the "Dorothy Hamill" because your mom was sick of braiding your hair. How traumatic when people thought you were a boy.

• Your Holly Hobbie sleeping bag was one of your most prized possessions.

• You wore a poncho, gauchos, and knickers.

• You begged Santa for the electronic game, Simon.

• You had the Donnie and Marie dolls with those pink and purple shredded outfits.

• You spent hours out back on your metal swing set with the trapeze.

• You had homemade ribbon barrettes in every imaginable color.

• You wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder really bad; you wore that Little House on the Prairie-inspired plaid, ruffle shirt with the high neck in at least one school picture; and you despised Nellie Olson!

• You wanted your first kiss to be at the roller rink.

• Your hairstyle was described as having "wings" and you kept it "pretty" with the comb you kept in your back pocket.

• You know who Strawberry Shortcake is, as well as her friends, Blueberry Muffin and Huckleberry Pie.

• You carried a Muppets lunch box to school.

• You and your girlfriends would fight over which of the Dukes of Hazzard was your boyfriend.

• Every now and then "It's A Hard Knock Life" from the movie, "Annie" will pop into your brain and you can't stop singing it the whole day.

• YOU had Star Wars action figures, too.

• It was a big event in your household each year when the"Wizard of Oz" would come on TV. Your mom would break out the popcorn and sleeping bags!

• You even asked your Magic-8 Ball the question: "Who will I marry...Shawn Cassidy, Leif Garrett, or Rick Springfield?"

• You completely wore out your Grease, Saturday Night Fever, and Fame soundtrack albums.

• You tried to do lots of arts and crafts things, like yarn and Popsicle stick God's Eyes or those weird potholders made on a plastic loom.

• You made Shrinky-Dinks!

• You used to tape record songs off the radio by holding your portable tape recorder up to the speaker.

• You couldn't wait to get the free animal poster that came when you ordered books from the Weekly Reader book club.

Friday Feast #46

Appetizer:
Name a store or restaurant you no longer visit because of a bad experience you had there.
I won't go to Tapps to eat anymore. About 7 or 8 years ago, a group of us from work used to eat there all the time and as we got more familiar to the wait staff, the service went completely downhill. It was as though they got complacent with us. Any restaurant that thinks it's OK to make you wait 40 minutes between ordering your food and serving it to you will not get my serrvice any more. That also goes for The Apple Barrel in downtown Halifax.

Soup:
If you could own any building in existence, which one would you want?
Would I have to pay property taxes and heating and would I have to keep up the maintenance? If so, I wouldn't want something too big. The first thing that popped into my head was the Taj Mahal but then I started to thing it's a little drafty-looking and I prefer something a bit cozier and that wouldn't have a ton of tourists trapsing through it. I guess that rules out owning the Louvre as well - as much as it would be nice to have access to all of that art. Hmm... so that leaves me with either a castle in Scotland or a Spanish villa - oh yes - a Spanish villa overlooking the coast of the Mediterranian!

Salad:
What's your favorite commercial these days?
As it is, I barely watch any TV. Uh - nothing stands out for me at the moment. I can't even think of a single memorable commercial.

Main Course:
When was the last time you felt guilty about spending money, and what was it you purchased?
Excuse me? Guilty? About spending money? ROFL

Dessert:
Friday's Feast is going to be having it's First Birthday in 2 weeks. What should we do to celebrate?
Design a special cocktail for the occasion.

The Other Stella

My friend Joanna has recently moved into a new apartment and next Friday she is having a little housewarming get-together. Recently, while I was over at her new place, she was asking my opinion about where she plans to hang some pictures in her place. She has a couple of bare walls inthe living room that would suit a good sized piece of artwork but has nothing to go in either spot. So I suggested that I whip up a painting for her for the housewarming party. I am working from a picture of her dog, Stella. What a sweet dog - and it's a great photo of her! So last night I worked on the painting. I think I have about one more night's work to do on it. I'd like to get it done early because it's oil and I want to make sure it's dry by next week.

8 Year Anniversary

As of today I have been living in Saint John - in the same apartment for 8 years. I've never lived anywhere else for so long in my life. We moved around a lot when I was a kid, and the logest I've lived anywhere else would have been about five and a half years. Most of the places I've lived were only for two or three years.

Work has changed and my friends have changed and I have a vehicle now, but I'm still in that same awesome cozy apartment. I can't imagine moving from there - rent is good, it's in a handly location, I've got a great landlord and the other tenants are pretty quiet.

I wonder where I'll be 8 years from now....

Quite The Weekend

Friday evening Joanna and I hung out at her place and decided to make a healthy meal and perhaps unwind with a gin & tonic. Well, one gin & tonic turned into many - and we wound up heading out and having a late but very enjoyable evening....

So Saturday, needless to say, was rather quiet as I caught up on some sleep, nursed a bit of a hangover and tried to avoid the rain. I went out to Liz's Mystery Science Theatre party - and enjoyed myself while I was there - but I only lasted through the first film before I had to go home and go to bed. It's a good thing I hit the hay early as I was woken up a number of times through the night - mostly by the water coming in through my bedroom window at the foot of my bed. When there are winds from the south and it rains, that window leaks like crazy. Thankfully we only get southern winds with rain a couple of times a year. Nothing a few towels can't take care of, but the sound of the dripping made it a bit tough to sleep. I did try sleeping on my couch for a bit, but the alarm for the store across the street kept going off. Sigh. Like I said - it's a good thing I went to bed early.

Sunday was a fairly quiet day in while the torrential rains outside continued. I finally managed to work on that logo I had to do. That evening for a break, I brought The Hours over to Joanna's. I'd forgotten how good that was. I love the way the 3 stories intertwine, and I'd forgotten how many good actors are in it.
